SLO in dogs and fungal infections?

Symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy… her nails are falling off. I’ve had this dog for about 18 months, adopted with a cough. Found emaciated by the side of the highway in West Chester PA. Have done exhaustive testing to try and determine the source of this cough to no avail. Considering bronchoscopy (?) with biopsy at this point…

She’s been diagnosed as being immuno deficient. Duh. But when I got this dog she was missing her 2 dew claws. Two additional nails have since fallen off, and she’s in the process of losing another now.

Anyone have experience with SLO? Any chance that alone would cause/ contribute to the cough? Part of the treatment for SLO is steroids & antibiotics, but if the cough is fungal in nature, the infection is going to flourish with the steroids.

Damned if I do, damned if I don’t from where I stand.
Yes, call to the specialist/ internist/ dermatologist tomorrow soon as the practice opens. Using Katonah Bedford Vet… any experiences there anyone wishes to share would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks.

SLO in dogs

Hi there,

I don’t have any experience with it but Whole Dog Journal (I believe it was last months) recently had an article on SLO - maybe there is something in the article that could help you.

I did, the prognosis is difficult…my particular ending was not spiffy, but this rescue dog had lots of other issues…the diagnosis was confirmed by a lab in CA which was the only lab at that time (10yrs ago) that ran it…I am sure there have been improvements since that time.

Thanks folks. If anyone else has ideas, reference points to start research, I’d be obliged.

Yahoo has an SLO group that I found helpful and informative. At this point, I don’t care if she’s got to live on the antibiotics… looks like doxy is going to be the way to go. Just am not thrilled about the potential side effects.

Better than steroids though.
