Small Farm Layout

One other thought. Do you really need three pastures and a dry lot for two horses? More money and more maintenance–especially if you do wood fence.

I have three animals and just a pasture and dry lot and it works great. They can’t keep up with the grass, but if I need to rest the pasture I have the dry lot. That said, I think two pastures for a small herd would be ideal. You can rotate between the two. You will really use the drylot in the winter/spring, so put a lot of thought into the topography for that site. You could skip pasture three for now, and have it by part of two and then always add a third pasture if you really need it in the future–put that money toward facilities, manure and hay storage for now. Or if money is no object, just ignore me.

Just trying to save you some money and fence work. You may also find you want to fence off an area after living there for a bit and seeing how water flows.
