Small Juniors height

Did this standard change between 2012 and now?

Asking because I see a friends horse competed in them but he has a USEF measurement of 15.3 and 1/2" with a heel measurement of 1 1/4". (How does the heel factor in?)

My understanding was you had to be mounted on a horse no more than 15.2 and 1/2".

Just confused and clearly not in my wheel house.

Any and all help would be welcome.

I’ll let someone else confirm since I’ve not shown juniors, but I’m pretty sure that 16.0 and up is a large junior so a 15.3 1/2" horse is a small junior.

Yes…smalls are under 16, larges are 16 and up.

I believe Small Juniors went from “under 16 hands” to “16 hands and under.”

Small for the regulars is 15.2 1/2 “2. The Green Hunter, High Performance and Performance Hunter Sections may be divided into the following classifications:
a. Small—animal height over 14.2 hands and not to exceed 15 hands 2 ½ inches.”

Ok that’s where I got the lost. That section in the regulars is what threw me.

I found the 16 hands and under part now.

Thanks everyone.

smalls are now 16 hands and under

edited to add - effective for the 2015/16 year

Right. There is a difference in height requirement between Small Junior Hunter and Small Hunter. You would think “small” would mean the same thing for both sections, but that would be too easy…

Measurement cards usually note heel height as well as whether the horse is shod. So long as the stick height is under the limit (now 16h and under for small junior), you are ok. I believe things like shoes and heels are noted in case you have to re-measure for any reason (such as under protest).

Yeah, I thought I was looking at this year’s rule book, but I was mistaken.

My small junior was 15.3 3/4. This was in the 90s. Then they had to be under 16h.

And there is no longer a heel height required for any measurement in the Hunter/Jumper world.
And, now, to be clear, a Small Hunter is 15.2 1/2 and under. A Small Junior Hunter is 16 hands and under. A Large Junior Hunter is over 16 hands.
