I just add water to the timothy pellets i feed & make it soupy. I won’t feed beet pulp my horse choked really bad on it then got aspiration pneumonia. He ended up in icu at vet hospital.
I feed soaked Standlee Timothy pellets and triple crown forage or cubes (depending on what’s in stock) mixed with their ration balancer and ground flax and salt. It’s important to have both short and long stem fiber. My horses LOVE it and have done great this winter. I feed 3 times a day (they’re at home and I only have two here right now) and just set up the next meal to soak whenever feeding… I’ve been leaving it in the heated tack room and letting things soak for a few hours at a time. About 2 to 1 ratio of water to pellets and cubes. All pellets and cubes are completely broken down and fluffed up before feeding… I have an old scraper I use for stirring and fluffing more, and just remove the prior meal bucket, hang the next meal for them, and set up the following meal to soak.
My horses also get hay three times a day, and water from heated buckets. I wish my farm was set up to have a round bale in a hay hut or something like that out free choice for them… but it’s not. So we do expensive, labor intensive micromanagement… but the horses are really content and doing great on this program.
If I am concerned my horse hasn’t drunk enough water in a day, I’ll make a 5 gallon bucket of ‘tea’ using regular temp water out of the hose in the barn with a small handful of horse food pellets. Let them dissolve, stir, serve. She will drink and usually drinks the bucket dry.
Salt EOD and soaked timothy cubes with every meal.
