Bananas.
Bananas, oranges, and apples are fantastic treats for older fellows.
Carrots can be too hard to break down for older guys, and might promote a choke if he doesn’t chew it up completely.
Nicker Makers are crunchy, “puffy” treats that are big hits with my guys.
Grapes and bananas are incredibly popular with my 35yr old, as are German Horse Muffins. The 20lb bag makes the treat more affordable, I can keep a couple in my pocket, I can break them apart into 6 smaller pieces so one muffin is 6x the reward. Perfect for horsey yoga - lots of stretches without feeding a ton of treats.
Best of all they’re soft. If he can’t get one of his few remaining teeth on them, he sticks the soft treat to the roof of his mouth and sucks on it.
I always worried that my 42 year old could choke on a grape or anything not totally mushy. He was totally toothless from the age of 38.
He loved his “blammies”. Great old soul, still sound to the eye when he died. His organs finally gave out. Miss him to this day.
Plus it’s so cute watching them if you just peel one and present it like a carrot. num, num, num. Sort of like giving a newborn baby pablum.
Bananas are one of the three foods that Tip won’t eat.
(Robin’s eggs are not on that list. He has eaten those. And the nest.)
I think I’m going to go see how many Fig Newtons I can get for $20 at Costco. I did think about going back to Corn Pops (he does love his Corn Pops) but Newtons are better for getting my fingers out of the way when he shows me that he can in fact touch his nose to his stifle NOW GIVE ME MY TREAT.
Thank you for all the suggestions!
Probios now makes a soft chew which my 31 OTTB loves! One a day. Great product.
