Solutions for Diarrhea?

Hay is from the same grower as previous cuts; summer’s first cutting I believe. No mold, was baled at correct time. The diarrhea is calming down finally. Vet and I are thinking it was a transitional reaction to new hay for this horse. Added Probios to feed as well. Although we have some of the best hay in the country out here I wish more people would simply grow local grass and Teff. Orchard is a power pack and often a tad “rich” for some.

Believe me we did seek the source. Did blood work, fecals, etc. All wnl. Nothing out of the ordinary at barn. A couple other horses also reacted similarly, but also now resolving.

My daughters horse has had diarrhea since before we bought him the owner says thy he does do that sometimes well it’s been a good 7months that he has had it off and on I’ve tried the probiotics and probios and thy didn’t help I’ve tried sand clear and thy didn’t help so I’m gonna try the yogurt thing then my next step is to contact the vet im at my whits in with this

We dealt with the same with one of ours. Ended up being allergies. Once we moved him to what he was least allergic to (Timothy in his case), added daily dose of MSM and at least one serving of Timothy Pellets (again, because timothy was what he was least allergic to) and the “runny butt” went away. And believe you me, I completely understand the daily washings - mine’s basically a white grey horse so it was very visible.

What is he being fed?

After little success with Probios, even at a double dose level, we used a Kaopectate/ Kaolin formulated for horses to get it under control in my daughter’s 30 y.o. gelding. Since then, we switched to BioEZE, which has been working great to keep him making normal manure.

I’ve used Metronidazole and it worked for horses that drank water from wells that needed to be bleached. At one barn the horses on one well had no problems while the horses on a contaminated well had diarrhea. So those horses got the pills,

We also are subject to sand colic down here which presents as diarrhea often. So we give psyllium fiber to prevent it.

Either way, get the vet out to check it out.

My 28 yr old has had squirting and diarrhea for the last 3 winters. He’s a very fussy eater and couldn’t get him to eat biosponge or psyllium. Didn’t try the metronidazole as didn’t know how to get him to eat it. He is impossible to deworm or syringe in anything. I have to have my blacksmith do it and he even has trouble.

HOWEVER, this year I started him on EquiOtic (equine derived probiotics) and also added Standlee Timothy pellets because I keep reading that older horses have trouble with long stemmed hay. So far, so good. This is the best he’s been in 3 yrs and I am so happy. He’s only been on the EquiOtic for a month and I just discovered I can get it from Smart Pak!
