For the heavily infested gelding, I’d do weekly invermectin as follow up to the DD Equimax, as well as a good bath in Nolvasan Surgical Scrub to ensure that you don’t have bacteria/microbes moving into the compromised skin tissue.
Thanks!
Had bumps on wither area
There is another post about hard bumps on the wither area, and after reading this tread I have a senario and would love some input.
- Horse has ulcers, which flair up sometimes for no reason, sometimes when he goes to shows.
- Hard marble size lumps on his wither area and one on his belly.
- No hair loss
- No noticeable itching
- No other hair, skin, coat issues
Thoughts on a treatment apporach? He is currently finished a 14day treatment for ulcer flair up. I was going to wait for that to be done before trying something else.
Also, I heard of fatal side effects or colic from equimax / zimectrin gold … any adivce on which treatment option to use? Equimax or ivernectin?
I would love to get this guy some relief.
Thank you very much.
We have now DD’d 5 horses here at the farm with very postive results with each and no side effects what so ever.
Im very pleased with how they look and no more scratching their necks, chest, tails, etc.
So how about this guys?
Two days ago, my boarder came over and I was telling her about the NTWs and all and we were discussing her geldings sores in 2007. SO, he is starting to get little scabby bumps and the Equimax was in the mail. So then she went to brush his tail and he had rubbed it RAW on the top of the dock. He has NEVER done that and I dosed them all with Strongid 4 weeks before!
So last night the package came and they all got double dosed with Equimax. EEkkkk we were all getting freaked out!
Sorry if this is a repeat question, but I wasn’t able to get through all 59 (!) pages on this thread.
I have a lactating mare with a 2 month old colt. Mare is suffering from all sorts skin issues, but nothing that seemed to match the threadworm symptoms. Colt is bothered by flies but otherwise in good shape. Just the other day I looked closer at the bald spot on his chest (which I had attributed to flies) and it’s now starting to peel flaky bits and reminded me very much of the pictures I’d seen at the beginning of this thread. On closer inspection, looks like some of the mare’s crusties are doing the same thing (though other still seem unrelated).
I am comfortable trying the DD protocol on the mare, but is it safe to do the same for the foal? He’s awfully young…
Has anyone done a recently bred mare? One of mine for sure needs the DD, but she’s not quite 60 days pregnant. I suppose I could let her suffer another few weeks, but she just looks dreadful.
What is the best method you’ve found to estimate weight? Most of mine are big WB’s, and on several the tape doesnt fit all the way around their girths.

I DD 4 weanlings last year with no trouble. I just single dosed a 6 week old after reading the circular in with the tube. My vet always told me to wait 6 months before using ivermectin… but I was out of the other stuff and, after reading that, gave him some.

I would think 60 days would be fine. The circular in with the wormer did tests with high dosing all through gestation with, I think, only one mare have a belly ache. Last year I single dosed several weeks in a row, per Chocomare’s suggestion, on a mare who was only a few months pregnant.
I’ve been following this off and on for the length it’s been up here. Just wondering if any Euros have reported in?
And I have 4 horses I’m going to try this on immediately as it’s about that time to worm. None of these are overly itchy, but they have some of the other symptoms reported on here and would like to give it a try.
And just to be clear, it is ok on a 140 plus day pregnant mare?
Terri
I think that if you have questions about dosing pregnant mares and foals you really should do your own research and involve your vet - even if it’s just to give them a heads up as to what you are doing. No one on this thread, to the best of my knowledge, is a vet. This is anecdotal experience alone - yes, A LOT OF IT, and obviously many, many horses are being treated for NTW this way and doing fine. But you should be sure for yourself that you are good w/doing this… if you had to call your vet because your horse was NQR afterwards or colicky (which FTR, I have never had happen) it might be a bit awkward to tell them to go read a 60+ page thread on COTH!

Equimax has ivermectin in it. Folks have reported better results from Equimax as opposed to ivermectin alone. I would not advise using Zimectrin Gold due to the mouth ulcer issue. Equimax is much safer. What I did is the first DD I did I used the full 1320lb worth of Equimax and did the remainder with ivermectin (about 600lbs worth for my girl). Then either follow up with a double dose (by weight) of ivermectin or Equimax, or Equimax/ivermectin. I chickened out with my girl and gave her a single dose of ivermectin two weeks after he first DD.
As states, Equimax is ivermectin + praziquantel. So is Zimecterin Gold - but, this one has known (even to Merial) issues with causing mouth (and potentially worse) ulcers as point-of-contact issues. It’s something about the carrier most likely.
Ivermectin is not supposed to cross the blood-brain barrier but evvvvvvvvvery now and then, less than once in a blue moon, it happens, and that can be very fatal (not sure if always).
Quest - moxidectin - seems to have a worse issue with fatalities than ivermectin crossing the blood-brain barrier, but I don’t know if you’ll ever find anything scientific about that. People on this board have lost young (but still full grown) healthy horses right after using mox.
California
I started to read the beginning of this thread and just don’t have the time to read all 60 pages LOL! So my question is, though I haven’t seen any no-see-ums here on the coast of California…my horse has shown these same symptoms…itchy tummy and mane…would I just assume he has these nasty worms? Also someone else mentioned that their weight tape was inaccurate so what is one to do?
Thanx
I should be studying for my Physics final, but here I am reading about creepy crawlers (and scratching myself everywhere) I’m far from grossed out, but boy do I itch right now!
Question - my mare is due for pyrantel pamoate now (was going to give it to her this coming Friday, actually). I want to try this DD of Equimax because she is a big-time tail-rubber despite squeaky clean udders and regular deworming. Could someone please suggest a way for me to get the DD of Equimax going while giving her the pyrantel pamoate in a timely manner (and all of this without wreaking havoc on her stomach)? I’d be VERY grateful! TIA.
By the way… she HATES being dewormed. Pretty soon she is going to hate ME, too!!
Pyrantel pamoate, in single doses, is not a valid deworming rotation, hasn’t been for some time. The resistance is too high. It’s only value now is in single doses for a horse with a heavy load, or in double doses for tapeworms.
Could someone please suggest a way for me to get the DD of Equimax going while giving her the pyrantel pamoate in a timely manner
Problem solved
Hey everyone! Well I was having great success this summer. Usually by April my horse is a mess. This year he was 98% better than I’d ever seen him. Then 2 weeks ago I DD with Equimax to maintain his situation. Well, today, two weeks later, he looks horrible again  Is this maybe caused by a die off after the worming? Should I DD him again?
Yup, die off going on… Critters are emerging. Day 14 repeat
So what if it’s not the nasty little neckworm critters? What does a vet normally do for itchiness and major hairloss? We are on the coast of california and I haven’t seen any of the nats (use to live in New Hampshire where there are tons!) so I am doubting it is the neckworms… any suggestions? She is losing hair allover her body, no welts, extremely itchy, no hives…
Although I have no pictures, I just wanted to post an update. My mare used to have nasty, nasty, NASTY sweet itch. Every summer it got worse and worse - gave oatmeal baths every day, all kinds of ointments, steroid shots, etc etc etc. Nothing really seemed to help. THEN, last spring I came across this thread and thought YES, finally something! So, I double dosed and then 12 days later, redid it. While I never really noticed a bunch of scabs on her neck, I can say that 2 pretty large lumps on either side of her barrel disappeared. The vet was never concerned with them, especially since they never grew, but now they are completely gone. Also completely gone was the frantic rubbing in her stall, the nasty bugs swarming her, and all traces/symptoms of sweet itch!. So, this spring comes along and I redid the DD - only one time this time though. The funny thing is, I was just saying to a friend of mine yesterday that this is about the time her Sweet Itch would be rearing it’s very ugly head. I am a fanatic about it, so I was searching all over her neck and not even one little sign of it. My mare went from sweet itch covering her entire neck and withers to now not having it at all.
Thank you so much to all of you who have contributed to this thread!
