something to kill adult Onchocerca? 19 CASE STUDIES POSTED-PAGE 58

Yup

Yeah I was hoping this would take care of the problem but she is itchy all over her body (no hives) so she has rubbed her butt raw (which could be pinworms) BUT she is very itchy on her shoulders as well and now looks like she is losing ALL her hair all over her body. I put her on Anihist which doesnt seem to help much.

Um, did you do the 2nd double dose Equimax on Day 14? If not, I’d do it and see what happens. It won’t hurt to try!

It has only been about 5 days, I was going to just do a dose of Ivermectin in 4 weeks but maybe I will try the Equimax again

I read pages and pages of this post (13 to be exact), but couldn’t find information on the long-term use of the DD of the wormer. Here’s my question - if you do the DD once, say in the spring, how long before you have to do it again? I am thinking that if the adult NTW’s are putting out babies every 3 weeks, that you will have to repeat the process the entire summer? Why don’t the horses have the “itchies” during the winter - the NTW is still there, right?

Do the DD day 1
Repeat the DD day 14

Continue with bi-weekly single dose Equimax during gnat season (aka: late spring & summer) since that is the ONLY time gnats are around spreading the onchocerca with glee. It’s also when the microfilaria hatch and exit the body, thereby causing the dermatitis.

ETA: Some people choose to do bi-weekly ivermectin instead, but I see Equimax as being much more effective.

I would really strongly caution about dd’ing every 2 weeks for a whole Summer. I’m sure there might be some special situations that call for that, but doing it just because it’s Summer and gnats are out is not necessarily a good idea.

You have to weigh the pros and cons - is the exposure of juvenile strongyles, who are not killed by ivermectin but who can then grow up to be resistant to it, REALLY worth it?

Yes, JB I should have clarified myself (not wise to type replies in the early morning prior to coffee ;))

The continued bi-weekly Equimax would be for those horses who are extreme cases…in other words, those horses that, even after the 2nd DD, still are presenting with very itchy dermatitis, etc.

If it clears completely after 2nd Double Dose, then just monitor and act with common sense

Please don’t shoot me. I have as a goal to tackle this entire thread, though I have read a good deal of it already.

On another thread (the one about “answers to all of your questions in one thread” I think) someone’s sample over-asked question was “what should my worming rotation be?” and the answer was to check this thread. I think it was EqTrainer’s rotation recommendation? Does anyone know what post or even what page that can be found on?

the answer isn’t ET’s recommendation, not necessarily. Why? Because she and I are in an area where Summer deworming is not necessarily an necessity, but Winter is. Northern Maine is going to be the opposite.

Hot dry weather isn’t conducive to parasite survival. But it takes the far Northern areas to have Winters long enough and cold enough and with enough snow cover to all but eliminate parasites from being picked up.

People really need to go to www.thehorse.com and look at the deworming webinars. Well. Worth. It.

Ok. Quick question here … and yes, I’ve read a lot of the thread, but I confess, not all.

I was getting ready to double dose everyone with Ivermectin, and I asked my vet, who happened to be there. No no no. He said, Safeguard,… no problem. But Ivermectin?

The reason why I’m asking this now: mare has quite a few “bumps” on her neck.

Any comment anyone?

There are so many posts in this thread from me, EqTrainer and others wherein it is stated that Equimax and Ivermectin have been tested at FIVE TIMES the dosage by the manufacturer with no adverse reactions.

If the horse has bumps, get on it and Double Dose Equimax (my preference) or Ivermectin.

I’m pretty sure ivermectin itself is 10x safe. I cannot find the margin for prazi, but I’m pretty sure it’s at least 5x.

Moxidectin OTOH is only 5x.

OMom stands up and SALUTES. Yes Ma’am!

P.S., sorry, CM, I missed the other posts.

Ach, don’t not to worry 'bout it. Ees all good.

whoa… this was a LONG thread! But sooooo informative!! ((& of course now I’m itchy))… Thanks to everyone that posted/shared info ((& thanks to Patty L for mentioning the thread))… now I think I have some answers to some of my boys’ problems!! Enjoy the weekend!! Now on to an internet search for the “best bargain” on equimax!! In the meantime, I will be DD w/ivermectin tomorrow (it’s what I have “in stock” right now)

I believe Horse.com has the best pricing on Equimax but am not sure of their shipping / handling price. If you do Smartpaks it is very easy to have wormer added to your next order. My only caution there is to watch the expiration date on what they send. The last tubes I ordered were due to expire in less than 2 months.

Thanks! So far Valley Vet is the best (12 or more @ $9.95). Surprised because Horse.com is usually the cheapest…

For the first time I’ve found a cheaper source for Equimax and other dewormers other than Horse.comhttp://www.horsehealthusa.com/details/EquiMAX-Paste/48-55.html

I have read most of this thread, and the links to the other site…
One question:
It seems that the threadworms mostly present as itching, sores on the midline and belly line, and sometimes as bumps. What about sores on the back of the fetlock? I have seen the midges around them., I am treating with iodine and an antibiotic cream, no result.

Could this be the threadworms also?

And another question:

I wormed with Ivermectrin last week. Can I DD with Equimax this week?

Thanks,
Loretta

Where gnats abound, NTWs are always possible.

Yes, you can Double Dose Equimax this week. Repeat on Day 14.
