something to kill adult Onchocerca? 19 CASE STUDIES POSTED-PAGE 58

Yup, pretty normal to see skin and scabs coming off, sometimes in rolls. Just treat topically as needed to soothe the skin and plan on the DD repeat on day 14.[/QUOTE]

That’s what I’ve been seeing - lots and lots of dandruff and dry skin sloughing off, but she looks SO much better. I’ve been covering her head to tail in fly gear and keeping her soothed. I’m amazed at how much better her tummy is - not nearly as inflamed looking. In a couple of days, I’ll do the second DD and let you know how it goes. Thanks so much for this thread - it’s been a lifesaver.

I just wanted to say that I did the two double dose Equimax treatments for our ony last summer, and it was the only thing that got rid of the raw patch from sweet itch on her belly. I also did it for my mare, and it has stopped tail rubbing. I’m doing it again this year, and just did the first treatment for both.

Tail rubbing seems to have stopped again. Next double dose is due monday. I’ve been putting Swat on the tail head and hair looks to be starting to come back some. Eventually I’ll get all these intervals worked out and stop the little boogers before they get going good…

WOW… This thread is awesome. I had no idea about the presense of Onchocerca and the problems they cause. One of my horses, Nic, has been really itchy lately (gets worse every time there’s a sunny/warm day between all this rain), with those small, hard bumps on his withers as well as tail rubbing (has been tail rubbing since I got him in Nov. '09, and I could tell that he had tail rubbed before that, as all the upper tail hair was short), also has an area on his chest that I’m assuming is a scar, but the gnats attack it and make it full of scabs and grossness.

So I’m off to go buy some equimax. Will take and post before/after pics and results. If this works with Nic, I have another mare that gets extremely itchy in the summer, and I will repeat it with her.

We have an elderly Arab that is demonstrating all the symptoms. I will DD tomorrow. Will take pictures, etc.

Question: Will DD work on Donkies? Every donkey we have ever had has problems with the flies each year. We have to wrap and administer Kenalog injections. Otherwise, their little legs turn into hamburger from the rubbing and chewing.

I’m wondering if I should try this on the Donks tomorrow as well? Input?

6-12-2010 DD today with Ivercare. This is the only brand with Ivermectin we had on hand.

Pics are on photobucket (hope the link works) http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v29/GailG/Double%20Dose%20Protocol/

So I’ve done the DD protocol with my appendix. However, I didn’t get photos, BUT it appears to have helped. Hair is growing back on his face, the sores around his tail where he was rubbing seem to be healing, and not sure about the mane rubbing. It’s hard to tell sometimes because I see him and put stuff on him (aloeheal) at least twice a day, but my grandma who hadn’t looked at that up close in awhile said that the hairless patches on his withers definitely looked better. Now I just wish I had the money to buy him a fly sheet that actually fit. (bought a couple Saxon sheets two years ago…never going for the cheap ones again. My old guy is wearing his at night because he gets eaten alive by mosquitos, but if he wears it any longer it rubs and hangs off to one side–no matter how many times I go out and fix it–)

Yay CR!

I don’t have time to read this entire thread but can you do the DD of Equimax if the horse is on a course of Dex and SMZ’s? My TB got super itchy and had open sores so I had the vet out the other day, she gave him a shot of Dex, prescribed oral dex and SMZ’s and gave me shampoo to bathe him with. He’s looking a little better now that the Dex has kicked in but I’m wondering if I should do the DD or if I should wait until the SMZ’s/Dex regimen is done.

Also does it matter if you use plain ivermectin vs. the Equimax?

Thanks!

Can’t speak to the SMZ/dex thing but…

From all the cases posted here and my personal use, the DD Equimax seems to be more effective than just plain ivermectin DD. No idea why…it’s just what has shown from those who’ve tried both (including myself).

So, I did the double dose Equimax on a horse that has hard bumps on the midline under the girth area, as topicals have had no effect. That was three days ago, and the hard bumps have ruptured and hopefully are now going to clear up.

What should be my next step? The horse was not itchy before, nor did he have any other skin issues besides the bumps. Since his infestation was apparently minor and localized, can I now do Ivermectin until the bumps are completely gone? Another double dose or perhaps weekly ivermectin until whenever?

Thanks!

I have a couple of horses who suffer from the sweet (nothing sweet about it!) itch and would be miserable. I have double dosed with Ivermectrin for the past 5 years and there hasn’t been nearly the amount of itchiness or rawness as in previous years even when they were on dexamethasone. It’s worth a try.

Definitely do the 2nd DD Equimax on Day 14. If necessary, feel free to repeat again on Day 28.

If after that, you still have obvious symptoms, follow up with weekly ivermectin.

Does anyone have any suggestions to reduce the hard lumps left by the Onchocerca die offs? They are nearly always coming up under the saddle area on one side in particular. :frowning:

My experience is they do eventually slough off. It may take a couple of weeks though. My mare gets these more on one side than the other too. Not sure why that is but good to know someone else has observed the same.

What makes you think they are from the NTWs? Middle of Winter for you isn’t prime time for these critters to be moving around.

Thanks Camelot - though these are there for months not weeks. As one lot reduces slowly another lot emerges. :frowning: Very frustrating.

JB the current lumps have been there since late Summer and I am in Queensland so even our winters are mild. We still have midges. Last lot of lumps came up after last dose of Imax Gold. Vet confirmed (visually) last September that they were Onchocerca. Vet in NSW just after purchase 18 months ago also confirmed.

I haven’t taken the step of biopsy, particularly given their position so am only going on the fact that they flare up after worming with Ivermectin/Praziquantel and the visual confirmation from the two different vets.

So, if I did the Equimax and ivermectin treatment last summer, would it be necessary to repeat the regimen this year?

Yup… Every spring thru first freeze. Just make double dosing a part of your regular regimen, whether it be Equimax for bad symptoms, or just Ivermectin to keep it under control.

I would just be cautious about doing it “just in case”. If you HAVE to, sure, do it. But if you do it and there was nothing (of note) to kill, then you may end up setting up a resistance issue for no good reason.
