something to kill adult Onchocerca? 19 CASE STUDIES POSTED-PAGE 58

I’m sure some of the “experts” on worming will reply, but I will address what we did with a horse that was suspected of having NTW’s. In addition to the DD Equimax protocol, we started him on the Bye Bye Itch supplement and the Bye Bye Itch lotion that we got from The Healing Barn. The lotion seemed to stop his itching very quickly and I think the supplement helped in the long run by making his reaction to the gnat bites less and less.

I’m not sure what “Equest Plus” is…do you mean Quest Plus? When we started the DD of Equimax, we too had an increase in the itching. We used dexamethasone for 10 days to counteract that. It did seem to work.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I meant Quest Plus. My mind went on auto piliot thinking of the Equimax. I will have to try that supplement and lotion. I have been attempting to research some with no luck. That one looks good from what I have read so far.

Meaning to post years ago since this thread was first started

Had a horse with belly crud (ventral mid line dermatitis), a circular scaly patch on his neck and no hair on the top 1/4 of his tail (just crusty). Tried many lotions and potions from vet for several years. Saw this thread, double dosed the horse as suggested, and all the symptoms cleared up almost immediately. Horse is 25 now but has been symptom free for years and his tail is beautiful.
Thank you, COTH, and sorry I didn’t post my experience sooner.

Has anyone had to do more than 3 double doses?

It was several years ago when we were treating a horse with NTWs and I can remember doing several DD of Equimax. I also remember talking to my vet about the double dosing and the remaining symptoms that I was dealing with. He decided to call a colleague of his at CSU Vet School and ask him if the NTW’s could have survived the DDings in that interval. They decided that at that point, I was no longer dealing with NTWs and that the skin irritation I was dealing with was due to something else.

Unfortunately, we lost this horse to colic shortly after that, so I don’t know the rest of the story.

Thanks - sorry to hear about your horse :frowning:

My first dose was ‘normal’ weight Equest (Quest in USA) to ensure I got the encysted Strongyles before doing Ivomectin to try and elevate the Colic risk.

Surprisingly one of the ‘least likely’ candidates is the one I’m having the most concerns about. His next DD is due Wednesday (already had Moxidectin and 2x DD of Ivo/Praz)

Yes, I did spring and fall DD for 2 years on two TBs, one mare, one gelding. The mare also was wormed monthly during that time frame. The mane and tail rubbing was reduced quickly, but it took that long to see changes in her midline dermatitus that stretched from low on her chest to her teats and was 6" wide in spots. When she passed away in September 2016 I had not done a DD in at least a year and there was no itching and no change in her midline.

Bumping for @Storm

What area are you seeing issues?

I have only used herbal wormers for my mares for the past 3 years. Should I do a DD of Equimax or start more slowly since they aren’t used to chemical wormers?

Well since herbal dewormers have been proven to have zero effectiveness I would not do a double anything since you likely have an extremely high parasite load. Start by running a fecal.

A double dose of Equimax isn’t going to kill more strongyles or tapeworms than a single dose, so no difference from that perspective. I agree a FEC would be a good idea in case the strongyle count is in the 1000s, then start with something likely to kill only some of them, like Panacur/Safeguard, or Strongid.

I didn’t pay attention to who the last poster was - the horse has had clean FECs, so a strongyle overload isn’t (likely) an issue

How do you tell if a horse has a mild case of NTWs and should get a double dose of Equimax followed by another Equimax double dose in 14 days? Slight thickening of neck, pronounced withers or bump on withers, leg tendon/ligament issues? Are there always skin sores? Is there a preferred time of year for this?

the larva cause “summer sores” when they hatch in the wound where the midge left them… There are other signs for established worm loads. Itching…

Well, I came across this thread and thought, “Huh. Could it be?” My 27 yo gelding, for years now, gets these wierd scabby sores (on his sheath and on his under belly) in the summer and has become itchy. And for years has tendon issues. Serious tendon issues in the front legs. And then, some 4-6 mos ago got a wierd “sore” on this thigh around the gaskin area and it never cleared up. Kind of became this dried up scabby thing that just wouldn’t heal. And then he became really lame this year and even more lame a months ago or so. So why not double dose and my vet was OK with the idea.

Well, just today did the second dose and noticed the sore on the thigh that would not clear up is pink in the middle. What is that? And his lameness has improved markedly in the past two weeks. Could.it.be???
