I apologize…I know how frustrating all this can be. However, your description is so …descriptive … it made me laugh out loud.
Picky horses are tough!
Mine loovesss hers but honestly, she also will casually eat a full sized bute tab, appquel, Zyrtec, etc just tossed on top of her grain so she’s not the most discerning haha
I loved the Whole Blends Balancer in concept and my guy ate it for a while, but those sweet potato pieces really get them. Over time, he started sifting out the sweet potato bits and leaving them in his dish, and then as the concentration of sweet potato bits started to overwhelm him in additional servings dumped on top, until he gave up on it completely. I attempted to feed the pure handfuls of sweet potato bits to another horse in the barn (with owner’s permission) and he ate the first bite then wouldn’t take another.
I hand picked the offensive dried sweet potatoes out of each of his servings for the rest of the bag, which I do not recommend as a hobby.
Maybe we should write them a letter and ask that that one component just…goes away. Add more sunflower seeds instead.
Were you feeding it dry or soaked?
No need, it made me laugh too as he was being such an over dramatic baby about it. I love him dearly and we will just stay with his oats. He is round and glossy and doing just fine on them alone.
I thought about trying Omega Match and I just might later.
I honestly thought about doing that but he is a smart one and he would just know they had been in there to begin with by smell. I hate sweet potatoes so I have no idea why they added them to the feed in the first place???
They all love BOSS and they should ditch the SP in favor of that.
I have never soaked feed in my life. Was it supposed to be? He is 5 years old and likes to chew his food.
I think his reaction to swelled up sweet potatoes in soaked feed would be the same
I can be almost 1000% positive that he wouldn’t eat soaked feed
I don’t think it has to be but I haven’t fed grain unsoaked in probably 12-15 years. The sweet potatoes soften right up so if it is was a texture thing it could help. However, if he isn’t a soaked food fan then it is a moot point.
Mine love the chunks. They find the Tribute so much more tasty than TC Gold balancer. One horse gets lazy about the BOSS and often leaves some for the mice to shell
Dry
ETA- Mash freezes here in winter and ferments in summer if made on my BO’s feeding schedule. I was hoping to find a ration balancer that he would just eat dry and that also had enough CU and ZN to make me feel safe with his sensi chestnut skin. I gave up on this mission and now he only gets mash (alfalfa pellets, oats, Vermont Blend Pro) and only the 5-6 days a week when I see him
It is quite soft as is and my 2 older mares are loving it but they have excellent teeth ( as per my vet).
I am contemplating switching them from Enrich Plus since they enjoy it this much.
It wasn’t the texture that was the problem it was the taste of either the sweet potato or beet pulp is my best guess.
Soaking would be a pain so I am hoping I never have to!
Some of the orange chunks are carrots just FYI. It’s not all sweet potato.
It could be one of the 3 or all 3 he objects to . I don’t feed carrots so no idea if he likes them or not.
My 2 mares sure are happy with it and just gobble it up with enthuasium. I may have to get it back on order for them.
