Speak to me of comfort half pads...thinline, sheepskin, Ecogold...

Thanks!! The main reason I can’t buy a dressage pad with it built in is that she’s only 13.3 abd she SWIMS in most dressage pads! LOL So I’m hoping for a half pad I can put under my saddle and properly sized pad…as well as my jump saddle too. Short backed ponies just makes things that much more difficult! LOL

Keg, I sent you a PM. I can loan you my Thinline for a trial if you want to experiment with it. (my sheepskin half pad, too, unless it sells this weekend. Someone’s interested.)

My guy is 14 hands and almost an inch—I know what you mean!!

I love my thinline…my horse is probably “meh” about it but I guess it is all psychological for me but I do feel that it keeps my saddle exactly where I put it and it doesn’t interfere at all with the saddle fit. Although purchased off the shelf, my prestige fits him like a custom saddle- I rarely if ever need it adjusted althought it’s been checked annually.

All I know is that I have tried riding in him with all sorts of gel pads and fleece pads and I’ve never seen a pissier horse- absolutely livid. kicking, tail swishing- those do interfere with the saddle fit.

Thanks didgery!! You are too kind! Maybe we COTHers need to start a lending stash of bits, pads, non-slip pads, stirrups, etc so we can all try before we buy! :-D. I think I’m going towards the ProLite because it’s shimmable. If it doesn’t work I’ll throw it in the COTH lending pile! :-D. I do want to know if it’s slippery before I buy it though. Anyone know?

A great idea! We should ask the mods for a sticky. I started a thread on off-course.

No the shimmable prolites are not slippery, they are in a fabric cover. They do make a “non-slip” pad that doesn’t appear to be covered, but I don’t htink that is what you are looking for.

I liked my ThinLine – till it got blatantly outperformed by my new Ecogold half pad, which is gorgeous AND amazing – and I am not a trend follower, in fact, I run OPPOSITE to trends. But the dang thing works.

I love my ecogold triple memory foam half pad.

I’m so torn!! LOL I am super excited about the Ecogold but it’s not shimmable like the Prolite! Did you notice a big difference with it? Do you still have good communication with the horse? Can you just stick shims on top of it between the pad? Or could I use the Ecogold WITH the Roma Protek riser pad?

…the Prolite looks really interesting! I like that it’s shimmable…The reviews look good too. Do you know what it’s made of? Is it squishy or firm? And does it slip? Ideally I want a shimmable, non-slip and protective pad for shock absorption and pressure point elimination…[/QUOTE]

I can’t tell you what it’s made of (and neither do they) but I can try to describe it. It’s like a medium firm closed-cell foam. But it’s not squishy. It’s quite resilient. It’s a lot thicker than a Thinline. I’ve never seen it slip, because the fact that it gives a little to the pressure of the saddle seems to “lock” it in place. It’s certainly more stable, IME, than sheepskin, but not “sticky” like the Thinline or a non-slip pad. I’m doing my best to describe it here, but it really is different from anything else out there.

I just want to mention that I know you want a shimmable pad, but you might find out that the prolite without shims fits the bill, because of how it works.
I’ve never used one of the shimmable ones (never had to) but I have both a GP and a dressage pad, along with a lunging pad.

I’ve had my GP relief pad for nearly ten years now, and it’s gotten a lot of use but remains exactly as it was the day I bought it.

I’ve heard that because the company is privately held and a “hobby” for the owners, there can be shortages from time to time, and you might have to wait to get one, but they do come up on ebay.

Dutchess Saddle & Bridle also sells them, and Kate is a pleasure to work with: http://www.dutchessbridlesaddle.com.

Hmmmm…saw this Cavallo pad on EBay UK. It also looks interesting! Open cell, closed cell and wool. http://www.cavallo-inc.com/us/English-Saddle-Pads

I’m so confused. I just want the best one as I feel awful I upset the princess with our saddle debacle and I can’t stop comparing and shopping! Mr Keg-To-Be thinks I’ve gone nuts. What do we think of that one asks the half pad newbie?

I’d prefer it if it were shaped more closely to the horse’s topline, with a bit of a “wither.”

Thinline, Ecogold & Professional Choice all offer 100% Customer Satisfaction guarantees on their products (I believe all are 30 day) so choose the one that appeals the most & give it a try

FP has a couple of sheepskin half pads that are used directly on his back, one with half rolled edges, one without (& a shimmable one that I’ve never placed the shims in as the pockets were not ideal) - they are all washable, the saddle must sit inside the rolled edges (check the sizing on the pads when you order).
Note the length of the Cavallo pads - they are fairly stiff (at least when new).

LOL! Well that makes that an easy choice!! Here I thought I’d be stuck!! Thanks!!

I don’t have one (yet) but there are correction pads and they come in various sizes. There are international distributors.

I love the nuumeds. All their “hi wither” pads are great for horses with prominent withers.

Question: Are the Thinline users putting this pad over a regular cotton pad or under? Just curious which works for the stability factor on a round pony. I really have to hike up the girth to keep my saddle from slipping, maybe I need to ditch the Mattes and stick with the Thinline?

Ivuse a thineline trifecta, its a thinline half pad without sheepskin. I find i does help and horses are less girthy ect. Its shimmable

For high withered beasts that benifit or need more of a lift in the front i have a cottage craft sheepskin half pad. But im dying to upgrade to a christ lamfell one.(eee exceedingly nice

I use thinline mostly for dressage saddles and sheepskin for jumping

I got the thinline thinking it would be a grippy bottom layer on my roly poly mule . . . no luck! It was completely soaked with sweat after the first 20 minutes of light riding and looked incredibly uncomfortable, so now I only use it over a natural fiber pad.
