Speak to me of extreme vaccine reaction with Vetera Flu and Rhino vaccine

Thank you for your reply. I’ve never had any issue with vet administered vaccines (all my horses’ vaccines are given by vet) every, having lived in three different countries, until now! I hope the fine needle samples sent off to the lab four days ago will have results very soon. I am glad his SAA numbers are coming down since starting antibiotics four days ago. My vet also suggested the Itranasal version next year.

My vet practice gave the vaccines and are sending all the bills to the vaccine company, who I believe will pay at least half.

Thank you for your reply. I suggested the antihistamine to the vet, but being this horse’s SAA numbers were way up and have dropped significantly since starting antibiotics (three and a half days on his second SAA test) of antibiotics and he is starting to feel better, that we stick to the plan that is working at the moment.

Interestingly, this horse was stung by ground wasps last summer in the pasture and was treated with antihistamines.

One vet at our practice does the hamstrings, another does the pectorals and two others do the neck. The four way dose over a month ago was administered in his hamstring area. The vet that came out for the recent two way (I try and spread the vaccines out to give the horse’s immune systems a break) in the neck. This horse couldn’t get his head down to graze, so i kept he and his buddy up in paddocks off the barn with hay and water at heights that worked for the affected horse.

My horses had spring shots done on Friday last week! We did the 2 geldings that have had reactions to flu rhino with the intra-nasal version. No fevers, no reactions- wohoo!! I’m so beyond pleased. We did pre treat the one who has the worse reaction with a dose a banamine before shots just in case. But usually he would blow a fever and get a big edema swelling for at least 2-3 days. But he’s been good to go never spiked a fever and obviously no swelling.

So great to hear the IN worked well for your 2 previously reactive geldings. We are definitely doing intra-nasal next year!
