I swore I would never own a JRT. My husband wanted a JRT. The last two dogs we acquired were a Border collie and an Australian Shepherd. I allowed my husband to pick the puppies so he’d feel included in the puppy choosing process but he still wanted a JRT. A couple years ago a friend of his was having to rehome her JRT/Chihuahua mix puppy. OMG! The dog is a trip. All 6 pounds of her. If she were any bigger she would be a chicken killer, instead she is a chicken harasser. She rules the other dogs with an iron paw, she cuddles with her people and she is skittish and howls and screams whenever someone new comes in the house. She’ll warm up to any visitor if they just ignore her and allow her to make up her own mind about them. Even with all her quirks she is hands down the smartest dog we’ve ever had.
OMG, yes. I swore I would NEVER have a small dog. I’m going on 30 concurrent years (and multiple dogs) of chihuahua ownership. GAH!
Me too. I am a terrier kind of gal.
I posted a thread about the Great Pyrenees cross puppy that showed up in my pasture Christmas Day 2014. He was 8 lb. of wet, shivering starving fluff. Now at 70 lb., a lot different! I obedience train with him as I didn’t know much about the breed and wanted to make sure if I was to have such a big dog that he would be well behaved. He is fantastic! Already has his CGC and we are working on novice obedience title.
Well… I have always said no hair! Big, small whatever, no hair. Dobermans were my breed of choice for years, and I currently have a Boston Terrier. NO COAT, until the 7 year old Newfoundland came strolling in. Hes at least a 150 lbs of constantly shedding (thus far) black clumps! I love him. Goose is a hairy bear of a dog, but slobber and all, hes been the best family dog that weve ever had. 7 yrs old, we don’t know much about his history… but he has moved right in and proved him self to be reliable with the little humans. Making him worth his considerable weight in gold
I always had bigger dogs, can do more with them as farm dogs, I thought.
Little dogs I like, but were not for me.
I groomed Grandma’s toy poodles, they were super nice dogs.
Now I am old and have a little terrier, a size that fits me better, more portable, easier to lift here and there when you have surgery than a bigger dog.
Not that it makes much difference, a dog is a dog and the right dog fits in any size and coat and color and sex and …
With my allergies, I should not even have a dog.
My dog, old now, is probably my last dog.
I ended up with a Beagle at one point as a bit of a forced rescue. Don’t like the breed and not a scent hound person in general. He was super sweet and overall well behaved but I never really became attached to him and the baying was like nails of a chalkboard. He was neutered, rehabbed, and socialized. I liked him enough that I kept him for over a year until his perfect home showed up in the form of an 80 yr old man who’s wife had just passed. They became the best of friends instantly and we’re inseparable. While I still don’t like beagles I am glad I got to be his stepping stone into the life he deserved.
Another one with a JRT after saying I would never have a small dog. My ex wanted one, so I got him as a puppy and ended up taking him with when we separated. He really is a fantastic dog, but requires a healthy sense of humor. I still would like a bigger dog but I have decided the little Terriers (terrors?) think they are big enough that their little size doesn’t matter. Lol

LOL…I totally didn’t want a “barky little” Chihuahua and now I am just head over heels in love with those little dogs!!! Never say never!
