Spin-off of my own thread about anti-backflow device on faucet

Recently you kind folks helped me identify the device that was stuck on the outdoor faucet at my new place. It was only an issue because it leaks, so badly that nothing gets through the hose. We’re not talking a little dribble!

I have now bought two different replacement devices and have failed on both. First I bought another backflow preventer locally, but the female connection (to the spigot) was too small. Then I found something online that was just an adapter, no backflow prevention. I thought I could use that in conjunction with either the original or the one I bought locally, as long as it bridged the size gap. But it didn’t. In the process I have learned that what these adapters are “adapting” is fine thread to hose-style thread. All well and good but apparently I have the only faucet in creation that is not only fine thread but also the next size larger.

I’m guessing it is not kosher to replace an entire faucet/spigot at a rental property (though I’d ask my landlord if he were in the country). I think I am just out of luck unless someone here recognizes the problem. I have searched and searched and nothing seems to adapt two different SIZES*. In fact, measurements are not mentioned at all when it comes to these items. I’m a little bummed because, as I mentioned in the original thread, the location for this faucet is perfect for several tasks. But I’ll live!

*Except, of course, the leaky thing I took off. One DOES exist. Maybe just that one!

Post a picture of the female end of the too small backflow preventer with a rule across the opening so we can see what you have …

I’m guessing you have 1/2 inch pipe thread and need 3/4 pipe thread.

edited to add … or take the old BFP to the place you bought the new unit from and exchange it for the proper size.

I will do that (with the ruler) for both the old leaky one that fits and the new one that doesn’t. The difference is so small, I’d be surprised if it was a 1/4". When I hold the new ones up to the faucet, they exactly hit/match the spigot rather than being large enough to go around it, if that makes any sense. Seems more like metric vs. non-metric versions of the same size but I have no idea if that’s even a possibility.

I plan to take the locally-purchased thing back to the store to see if they have a different size (didn’t see one but it’s worth a shot). I know the online place only has one size.

A mere wild guess, but would maybe one be threaded for hoses, the other for pipe, why they don’t work together?

I think that would be obvious, the difference is very clear and you can’t thread them, they just don’t fit, even of the same size.

You can find an brass adaptor that will go between whatever is on the faucet, and whatever the valve has on it in Lowes or Ace Hardware.

Does the faucet flow fine with the valve off of it?
