Spinoff--what to bring to the hunt breakfast?
Southern Yankee, what exactly do you mean by placing things “on the engine”? Inside the hood? I’d forget it and drive off for sure!!!
We don’t have electricity at our fixtures so we can’t reheat food for the tailgate. For the members that bring warm dishes they cook the dish that morning and wrap them in foil. Then when they get to the hunt they pop the hood on their truck and place the dish over the engine (the engine is hot from driving to the meet). Typically the food is still warm when we return from hunting and are ready to eat.

WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT ASK THIS QUESTION ON FOXHUNTERS ON FACEBOOK!!! I made the mistake last year and was blasted for being a social hunter and not hunting to hunt… if they only knew how our hunt hunted then they wouldn’t have any room to talk. We are very small and informal but we hunt to hunt and every member has a job.

I have a theory that it relates to distance to the fixtures. At hunts where the field drives an hour plus minimum to their fixtures I’ve seen more lavish spreads and people gathering afterwards to make a social event of it, but when you can’t throw a dead cat without hitting 3 different hunt territories folks are more likely to just want to get home and get on with their day.

No dead cat tossing here, we drive generally 1 hour or more to our fixtures. And yes, there are some lovely spreads afterwards!

SY, I recall that weird discussion on FB! Anyway, if “socializing” were my priority I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be getting up at 4:30 am to perform a Cinderella routine on four horses, driving all four of them plus 3 kids over an hour down a bunch of narrow roads where I’m praying no one comes the other way because one of us is either going to have to back up or drive into a ditch, then engaging in an activity where I splatter the most expensive outfit I own in mud, whip it with briars and wipe it down with sweat, and after 3-5 hours hop off my horse only to step my favorite boots into a cow patty while I’m cleaning four horses for the SECOND time in one day… I mean, seriously, I’d just sleep in and go to brunch!!!
