'splain this bit setup I saw please- D ring, no hooks/slots, curb chain

V, maybe someone got one with hooks and had their blacksmith remove the hooks. I’ve seen bits modified by farriers before.

Could be. It was the weirdest show ever. Weird bits, cross country jumps in the hunters, someone wearing a shadbelly all day for unrated divisions for no apparent reason. Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria!

I’ve seen lots of Qh/Appy/Paint (in other words breed horses) with a plain D with a curb. Same thing. Not a Myler, no hooks. I too have wondered what the point was.

Per your description of the horse, maybe it runs out so bad that the curb chain is there to keep the bit from being pulled through the mouth sideways.

Western rider gone English? I see lots of curb chains on snaffle bits with Western riders, for whatever reason. I think it’s just to stop the bit from pulling through the mouth, though I certainly don’t put a curb chain on a snaffle and haven’t ever had issues with that happening.

Reviving this thread as today I saw a number of these bits and snuck a closer look at them. The ones I saw today were most definitely Myler snaffles (or Myler knock offs) that someone had added curb hooks to. The curb hooks were placed on the loop on the D-ring that also accommodates the cheek piece, with the reins through the lower loops. It was basically the same action as you would see with the reins through the slot of a “real” Kimberwick, but from a distance, looked more or less like a regular D.

I’ve seen very few actual chains on snaffle bits in Western stuff, but plenty of leather straps, which are usually quite loose and just there to keep the bit from pulling through the mouth. I use one with my mare when I ride her without a noseband and she actually seems to like having it there.

Have to rib you a little - it’s MYLER, not MYLAR
