I think a horse can hurt itself on just about anything.
If you do not want your horse shown with square jump rails then do not show in those classes.
It is probably best to ask if those rails that you are worried about are the rails that are going to be used for the jumps in your division before scratching.
I personally would not be overly worried, but each person has to do what they think is best for their horse.
