Keep us posted. We’re always pulling for the seniors especially.
Thank you! He had a quiet night outside thankfully. My regular vet will be following up tomorrow, if he’s still sore I’m thinking we might do another ultrasound and hopefully he hasn’t done anything new
Small update:
Vet suggested it may be a hoof abscess, which I’m skeptical of. He’s never had one in the 12 years I’ve known him. Also seems odd that’d it would be the same leg with his injury, and he’s also presenting as he did 6 weeks ago with the toe walking.
That hoof was slightly warmer than the others, but he didn’t seem ouchy when I touched anywhere around his hoof. No smell or anything, don’t think I could feel a stronger pulse. Does anyone think this could be an abscess? That would be more preferable but not too sure. Could his hoof be warm because of his stifle injury, or because he’s resting the leg more? It definitely wasn’t “hot”, just a bit warmer. Wondering if it’s just the normal process of him increasing blood flow as well.
I’ll check his hoof again in the morning as well.
Edit: Hoof felt the same as others this morning and his pulse felt the same in both hind legs. No sensitivity in his hoof at all. He wasn’t as sore this morning so hopefully he’s starting to feel better again!
I’ve heard of people using those temperature scanning tools to be able to track heat in feet. Even if not accurate, it could be like a weight tape, so you can at least see progression.
Actually, now that I think about it more, one of my farriers used one and said it was a great tool for locating abscesses. I don’t recall the specifics but maybe someone else does.
Trazedone given daily along with Chill Ultra & Animed Via Calm with hemp or Kalmzcazi & Positude
Did you use hoof testers? Your fingers aren’t going to apply enough pressure unless it’s very close to the surface.
Trazodone did nothing for him
Just a hoof pick and some good pressure. I wouldn’t imagine my fingers would penetrate his hoof. It wasn’t an abscess however, definitely his stifle.
dr mcdonnell at equine behavior clinic at new bolton did a phone consult w me when I had a really anxious horse. at new bolton, I’m told the hospitalized horses are all followed by behavioral med via stall camera. you could consult w her, even send her recording of what your horse does at night. I’m a retired psychopharmacologist and all the antidepressants can have some really uncomfortable side effects. maybe horses are completely different. but it’s also possible trazodone makes him worse in ways you can’t see.
Ask your vet about Renovo, I just injected my horses’ coffin joint with it (articular fracture) and it is supposed to be amazing for soft tissues as well. https://renovoequine.com/
