Stall skins
I really like them still and have put them in the run ins at my cousin’s barn for her. I did find a cheaper option that you can get than the brand name stuff. Stall Skins are essentially 10oz non-woven geotextile fabric. You can find this stuff a whole lot cheaper than Stall Skins (because anything marketed for horses seems to have a 200% markup!) I found this by the roll and for doing several stalls and run ins - it’s much, much less $$$!
Snowflake, where did you buy the rolls of the geotextile fabric? We are in Canada and thinking of installing this material rather than rubber mats in a 15 stall new construction barn, but Stall Skins do not currently ship here (unless you fork up $$$$)

How has the rolls of non name-brand stuff held up?

Thanks!

You can get stall sized cuts on ebay. Rolls of it were posted on my local craigslist by a landscaping company. Farmtek has it too as Cow Carpet IIRC.

Personally, I prefer rubber mats. Even with plenty of bedding we had a hard time keeping the stalls dry when we had the stall skins. It actually would have been better had we been able to use less bedding, but we were told by the owner to keep the bedding up past the edge of the skins to protect them. We battled thrush all summer while we were there. Never had an issue before or since those stalls.

What was under the stall skins? I’m considering them for my new barn but planning on a base of 6 inches of crushed stone so there is somewhere for it to drain to. I would think they’d be useless on top of packed clay.

I honestly do not know. We were staying with a friend out of state for the summer and her stalls were already constructed when we moved in. She did have her place professionally built, not self constructed. We literally had to keep easily 12 inches of bedding at all times. Even with liberally taking bedding out with each cleaning it was impossible to keep dry enough. Always damp, however this was in TN, so a very humid state.
