Weird question I know, but looking for a jumper stallion to cross with a 17.2 mare that produce less height. Aiming for a 16.1-16.3 baby ideally. She is out of the Rio Grande line and a complete sweetheart, very rideable, so adding a little fire would be fine. Don’t want to go the pony route particularly as concerns of producing something smaller than that and needs to be a marketable baby. Mare has a ton of leg and built very uphill with complete hunter movement. Almost no knee or hock action at all. Would be a first baby.
We have bred 4 mares to Royal Appearance who stands at Virginia Tech. 3 of the 4 are smaller than the moms and all have AMAZING jumps. I’ve seen a few other foals of his with mixed results in size. Definitely one to contact.
Might find some good suggestions here.
Here is short video of one of our Royal Appearance progeny free jumping with Bruce Griffin.

Best of luck in your search.
I thought you had an amazing stallion? Will it not help your height problem?
As Di Villagana or Pablo are both on the small side with good jump. Have to warn you that while my other Pablos are finishing under 16hh, I have a 5yo who is 18.2hh out of a 17.0hh Dutch mare.
I was going to say Pablo, based on offspring I have seen. But I had not seen tuckawayfarm’s!
I have heard Cabardino does not throw lots of height… you should ask Charlot Farms.
Having never bred to Paparazzo, (son of Pablo) but have seen a few nice offspring that are on the smaller side and really sweepy hunter movers that can also jump well.
Cabardino is himself built refined, but on occasion has thrown taller when paired with larger mare lines. He would probably be my first choice for the all arounder, you might risk size a little but get his even temperament and fantastic jump. I have bred two times to him with 16-2 mares that throw large and got the 16-2ish that you’re looking for.
Cabardino has also been crossed on a number of Rio mares, as W. Charlot has a lot of Rio Grande blood in their mare base. Talk to Christine at W. Charlot: she is very helpful and knowledgeable about the horses they have bred, and this will give you an opportunity to learn what Cabardino has produced when crossed with mares that have some similar bloodlines to yours.
This is strictly out of curiosity, because I saw Royal Appearance when he was at Hilltop. Why was he donated to Virginia Tech?
Although Pablo is smaller himself, I have seen many that were considerably taller. I vote escudo II. He is just fabulous!

For one this mare is totally and completely unsuited to my stallion for a number of reasons. The first of which being he produces alot of knee and hock action something not conducive to a hunter. While he is nice, I am not ignorant enough to expect miracles and know where his strengths and weaknesses are. Producing hunter movement is NOT in his list of strong suits. Producing a nice jump is. Two at 17 hands, he is the smallest of his sire and throws large babies. No need to encourage more in there. It is an ignorant statement to state that “you have a stallion why breed to anything else ?” Same as with any stallion owner with sense. They know no one stallion is right for every mare.
Equine - I did consider doing that, but my schedule has been crazy lately, but I do believe a call may be in order.
Thank you for the polite input - is royal appearance TB or WB ?

Great advice!
I would not count on Cabardino to throw small, but FWIW, I have a Cabardino /Rio mare – 16 h tops. Love her!
You might ask Silver Creek about Vallado/Praise. I have no idea if he would suit your mare; but I belive he, and his son, Validation are around 16.1 They are both lovely!
Thanks for the suggestion ! I think I will definitely look into him - I’m hoping he is is offered fresh or chilled as I will not take the frozen route. Too much cost/risk ration there for first time going AI. On my end (have shipped, but not received). Think we will start safer and work from there.
Silver Creek does look to have some beautiful stallions. I’m looking to hopefully not top 17 hands. Got this mare with the understanding she was 16.3 and saw extensive vidoe, pics, etc of her. She is absolutely lovely and her personality cannot be matched. Talk about an easy mare. But I took one look at her and said, she’s not 16.3 we sticked her and 17.2 on slightly uneven ground and not square. I think we square her up on concrete and she is 17.3. Don’t want her to foal a 4 month old ! Especially for a first !
Diarado is known to produce smaller, love the jump and yet the movement never looked huntery enough to consider him. But there’s a Diarado son of interest worth finding out more…don’t know his name but “wow”
Having trouble posting link, but search youtube for “Top Hunter for sale Licensed Stallion Diarado 2009”
Can’t believe I forgot to mention Vallado/Praise. I bred four of them. The three geldings are in show homes and the filly gave me a lovely foal this year and is expecting another. Two very huntery and one that could do hunters or jumpers, another gelding was out of a Roemer mare and sold to a pro as an upper level dressage prospect.
I think Silver Creek posted this fall that his new owners are standing him for fresh. Definitely worth looking into.
The ad for Praise in the stallion issue indicates frozen only.
It is my impression that Escudo II doesn’t consistently add height. I have two full siblings (2012 and 2013) out of a 16.1h mare and I suspect they will top out somewhere in her height range. The 2012 is a lovely hunter mover and won on the line as a foal at Upperville and Warrenton. The 2013 is gorgeous, built more uphill than the 2012, has a tad bit more knee, but much more suspension. I have used Rainbow Equus for 4 foals and Edgar is just the best to work with. I would contact him directly if you’re interested in any of his boys. He has always been very upfront and honest with me about the type of mare that’s best suited to his stallions and what they tend to produce. Best of luck!!
What about Jupiter to produce a smaller hunter?
