Baby buckskins absolutely can look funky (also adult buckskins can have crazy winter coats )
It went well, thank you for asking!!
Vet didn’t grab a fecal sample because she was given the ivermectin too recently, so the vet said she’ll grab it in a month when she’s back to give Mochi a booster.
X-rays were better than I expected I suppose. She has a curb on both hocks, which is what caused the need for X-rays.
The vet said it looks like she was windswept when she was born, and not kept in a stall after being born which I suppose is the “fix” for that (going outside strains the joints). So the hock x-rays showed that “both have distal tarsal bone compression mild at dorsal aspect” with her right one only looking a bit compressed and her left one looking worse. However, the vet said that she wouldn’t expect them to cause major issues, just a predisposition to arthritis.
Fetlocks looked good, just a bit of swelling due to rapid growth that the vet said we needed to temper in order to not cause issues with the hocks, and “mild to moderate” sickle hocks that she will “hopefully grow out of”.
In order to help the hocks as much as possible, her suggestion was actually to keep her in a stall most of the day, with 6 hour turnout on flat land. Interesting!
Otherwise, her coat, weight, and belly look much healthier than the last time she saw Mochi and she seemed quite happy with the X-rays and Mochi’s appearance.
What’s the diet? It might be up there but I can’t find it LOL This is the biggest factor in slowing growth but also NOT short-changing nutrition
sickle hocks is a conformation they don’t grow out of. If you can get a decent conformation-type picture, we can see what’s what. So often, people see stance and think conformation
did she say for how long?
So sorry again for the late response! Was out of town at the beginning of Nov, then sick all the next week (guess that happens when you rarely leave the house these days, lol), then holiday stuff.
Of course, the day I get my husband to come out is the day she’s the grubbiest… This is from mid last week and even yesterday she looked a lot better than this. She’s definitely improving every day! I just keep telling myself she’ll be a beautiful, sleek, hopefully dappley golden someday…
Vet recommended changing her to a Growth feed x2 a day to slow her growth to something more steady. She’s definitely an easy keeper, thankfully! The physitis in her back fetlocks has pretty much disappeared thankfully (they’re pretty puffy in the above pictures but looked normal yesterday).
She didn’t, but she’ll be back in a week - I’m interested to hear if she’s seen any improvement on her legs, but I think her fetlocks were the main reason she wanted her in for longer than out.
