Staying riding fit during self-isolation

[QUOTE=ThreeFigs;n10605072

I’m probably in greater danger at my local grocery than at my barn.

Agree!

The difference being everyone NEEDS groceries, and there are delivery options available so people can stay home. Unless you are a barn owner / worker or in a self-care situation, none of us NEEDS to be at the barn, much as we want to be.

It’s got nothing to do with our own personal risk and everything to do with minimizing public risk. Without the ability to test every single person and isolate all the asymptomatic carriers and their contacts, the only way to control this is for everyone who can to stay the f- home.

How many Covid 19 cases are there where you live?
You do realize how virulent this is right? How many people are dying? Did you look at Italy? Or even the numbers in the US?
In Ontario - our provincial and federal governments as well as the sport organizations have said stay home.

It’s not just ThreeFigs who doesn’t get it. There was a long discussion in one of the Ontario equine related Facebook pages about what local barns are doing. 95% said they were closed to everyone except essential staff, but there’s that 5% of BO’s who say their precautions are just fine, and the boarders who think it’s “retarded that everyone is over-reacting.” And then the thread got deleted. Probably too many barn owners worried that their boarders are telling everyone they are still open. Sigh. Humanity is doomed.

I chimed in on that conversation as well.
It is terrifying how many people are not taking this seriously.
In Iceland, they are testing everyone and one thing they have determined is that many people have it and don’t show any symptoms at all. There is simply not enough medical equipment - ventilators to support everyone who will need it.

I was riding my horse up until a few days ago. I’ve now decided to stay away from the barn. There are several workers there who handle my horse. That means they’re touching her halter, lead rope, gates, latches, hoses and door knobs that I also touch. And there are several boarders there that are also touching a lot of the same things.

You’re not being exposed (or vice versa) while you’re riding. It’s happening the rest of the time that you’re at the barn. A lot of my fellow boarders are at a higher risk due to their age as well.

The small town in Italy that successfully brought transmission down to zero found the same thing - they tested everybody and something like 75% of the positive cases were not yet showing symptoms at the time of testing. They had no clue they were spreading the virus. THIS is why we are all supposed to suck it up and stay home, since Canada and US do t have enough tests for healthcare workers and people with COVID-19 symptoms, let alone for people who appear healthy.

The people who think that the virus can’t spread in barns because no one comes into direct contact with one another need to do some research.

This virus lingers in the air for 3 HOURS (longer on many surfaces). So someone who is asymptomatic could cough while riding their horse, you ride through the same area and there’s a huge chance of transmission. Especially right now where most indoor arenas are still closed up with minimal circulation.

Yes, and when any of you riding merrily about outside falls off and requires medical attention, you will be just one more drain on a completely overstrapped medical system, because apparently we can’t give it a rest with the luxury pets for one GD minute.

But hey, as long as you all get to go to your happy place!

Now, back to the actual post. Has anyone found a good youtube channel for yoga or even more specifically yoga or pilates for equestrians?

I, too, am following the Debbie Rodriguez Success in the Saddle DVDs. I’ve been doing those since January, and I think I’m noticing a difference. I haven’t ridden much in the wintertime, but I feel like I’m getting stronger for sure. Not all the exercises are easy (for me), but I’m getting better. I still can’t do 100% of them perfectly, so I figure it MUST be a good workout!

Sara Beth is one of my favorites!

I also think you might like Erin at Five Parks Yoga:

A couple of things I love about Erin’s channel is that she has some long classes–as long as an hour and fifteen minutes–which is great when I need a major workout and a major de-stressor. I also love the fact that she’s an incredibly fit role model, but is also obviously an athlete, and she is obviously teaching a class, not trying to achieve the “perfect yoga look.”

All of these yoga channels will be like, “why did we have such a bump in traffic,” and have no idea it’s because equestrians are looking to remain flexible.

There is Equifitt. https://equifitt.com/about/

To paraphrase a quote I saw online “The virus does not spread. We spread it. Stay home.” Don’t be selfish. There are so many reasons not to go to the barn:

  1. Direct and indirect spread of the virus whether you have it or not.
  2. Possible injury requiring a visit to an already overwhelmed hospital taking staff and space away from critically ill patients, not to mention increasing your odds of being exposed.
  3. The more people that move about, the longer the pandemic continues, the longer governments will have to keep tight restrictions and the greater the devastation to the economy.

It is not about you getting sick. Don’t be selfish. Stay home!!!

It’s unclear how transmissible this virus is in the air. Lab research is saying that it is detectable in the air up to 3 hours, but field or clinical research is saying that they aren’t finding cases transmitted that way. I too would like more clarity on this.

Especially how transmissible it is in the air from people who do not yet have symptoms and are not coughing. Apparently measles and TB are far more infectious this way.

”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹I don’t know how locked up your indoors are still yet. A breeze or just the movement of open air outdoors would disperse and dilute viruses quickly.

I’m not trying to downplay the value of social distancing but I also don’t think you are at risk walking down an empty sidewalk without touching things.

I’m not trying to imply you are at risk of infection walking down an empty sidewalk. I’m implying you are at risk at a stable where it is an enclosed environment (as temperatures around here are barely above zero) and you have no idea how many people around you are asymptomatic.

Unless your horse requires a high level of personalized care which your barn cannot provide, or you are in a co-board situation I am not sure what excuse can be used to go to the barn to ride. The more exposure outside of your home, the more at risk you are and therefore to the people around you.

Glad to hear other people are challenged to stay motivated exercising at home. Misery, company.

I’m in Massachusetts and only “essential” employees in “essential” businesses are supposed to be traveling outside their homes. That allows for barn workers, vets, and so on to be out. Some barns are blurring the boundaries to let boarders visit their horses and ride. Shortsighted, I think.

Can’t go to pool, which was my reliable aerobic exercise, so I’m trying to start jogging, since it’s there. Aside from that, I have my mat and weenie little hand weights. Unfortunately I don’t get engaged with video programs easily, human company has been my basic gym motivator!

At our last class, our yoga instructor downloaded some classes that were appropriate for each of us. I’m doing a more intense strength one and a flow relaxation one.
If it ever stops raining and snowing here, I’m going to be out on my road bike.
I could ride. But my horse’s only companion is going through severe laminitis and she stresses badly if we get out of sight. She’s only 12, and he’s 28. Ironic, he’s in perfect health and she has so many issues.

I have been using yoga with Adriene- she has quite few options.
Also - if you want to start jogging/running - I highly recommend couch to 5k. Especially if you don’t see yourself as a runner. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/72/b0/f7/72b0f757638712ffd8f14a215af1c308.png
