Stinky people bedding

you know, healthy dogs don’t really smell at all, nor do they leave “body odor” behind in bedding unless they blew their anal glands or rolled in something gross and transferred it to your bedding, in which case I suggest throwing out the bedding if a simple washing won’t remove whatever gross material it was.

If your dog has an obvious body odor that lingers in bedding there’s something wrong with your dog- usually the culprit is being fed an unhealthy low-quality grain-based diet, but sometimes other things, like skin infections, ear infections, or mouth problems, can cause lingering odors.

Now I have a new odor problem - skunk in my barn clothes - evidently I was upwind of stinky when he let go a ways away and my clothes definitely have the tang. Along with tomato juice (stains so not so good) I’ve got internet results: soaking in an ammonia solution, a vinegar solution and a baking soda solution, and another vote NOT to tumble dry as it will set the smell.

I’ve had good luck washing down - but never had really gross stuff. I think the quality of the down is important, and that it is dried so thoroughly you think it is overdone. Put some old clean runners in to beat them about so they stay flluffed.

Perhaps it is time to donate the duvet to the dog, and buy a nice fresh one?

Borax, baking soda, baby laundry liquid should help.

My down barn jacket washes like a rag…it comes up perfectly.

He is grain free on a fish-based diet. He doesn’t smell like that. It really smells like dog puke but I can’t find anything. He was only on the bed for maybe 10mins before I discovered and removed him. Went to bed that night and PeeeUuuuw.

He has been known to leak his anal glands where he lays.

Will try to buy Odoban tonight and wash it tomorrow. Paws crossed it works.

Follow up: Success! -I think

I could not find Odoban at Walmart. I did find 20 Mule Team Borax which was recommended on some other COTH odorific threads. I also bought TideSport as that was also recommended.

I washed the comforter with the 20 Mule Team with an extra rinse cycle. I did dry it in the dryer then hung it over the sofa to be sure it was completely dry. It was.

It smells like nothing. Perfect!

The TideSport with Febreeze I washed some athletic clothes with and it smells so heavily scented, the armpits especially . A good smell, yes, but I’m used to Arm & Hammer detergent that is much more lightly scented to where I don’t smell anything when the clothes are done.

I think 20 Mule Team is the winner. Washed all the dog bedding in it; now watching and waiting to see if Joey reacts to the new detergent.

Also bought a gallon of vinegar but haven’t used it yet. Will use it on the synthetic athletic clothes to try to get the B.O. out and use 20 Mule Team.

Arm & Hammer Washing Soda. (WASHING soda, NOT baking soda.) It comes in a box and will be by the laundry detergent in the grocery store. Use two full measuring cups and it should help tremendously.
