Storm Cat offspring for eventing?

I got an OTTB gelding earlier this year. He won over $400K at the track and was retired at 7. He is a Storm Cat grandson, sire is Cat Thief. He is also a grandson of Seattle Slew on his dam’s side. Personally, I love Seattle Slew lines, so I took the chance on getting something older as one of my projects. Here is his pedigree: http://www.pedigreequery.com/dr+w

I love this horse. I have dealt with a lot of OTTBs, as I get a lot as projects to bring along. Charlie (the barn name we gave him) is a funny guy full of personality. He loves attention and loves to play games. We are still working out his flatwork, but he sure does love to jump! He is a very nice mover and a scopey jumper. He is incredibly intelligent. He is really laid back and fun to hack out. He does have a stubborn side, but I haven’t seen it very much in the 5 or so months that I’ve had him.

He’s a good 16.1 that I think will be quite a big boy, once he fills out muscularly.

I definitely wouldn’t write a horse off for SC lines. I agree with all of those that have said you have to look at the horse first…pedigree second.

I have a Storm Cat grandson. I lOVE this horse. Moves like a 10, cuddles like a little kitten and hacks quietly alone. He also has Fappiano on his sire side and his dam is directly out of Red Ransom.

From what little knowlege I have, I think he has a pretty good pedigree which may have cancelled out the nasty SC rep.

Who knows. all I know he is a dream come true.

I also have a Storm Cat grandson by Aljabr out of Watch the Storm (despite the name, Storm Cat is on the sire’s side http://www.pedigreequery.com/al+amir3) and he’s fabulous. Came to me as a playful biter who liked to rear when he got spooked. He settled right down and fox hunts beautifully and quietly stands. He can be a bit of nutcase, but on a low sugar feed and a magnesium supplement he’s a calm, kind and relaxed gentleman. He hacks out alone, quickly learned to jump coops and logs, carries himself beautifully and overall is just a joy. He’s so damned smart and fast to learn I can see where he could be big trouble in the wrong hands. I wouldn’t hesitate to get another one!

Hi,
I have a Storm Cat grandson something older as one of my projects. Here is his pedigree: http://www.pedigreequery.com/richie+by+the+lake He is almost black and only small white star. He is a solid 16.2 foal of 2006 winner of almost 60,000.00 and ran 28 times. Retired in 2011 and I bought him May 2012 from a girl who had not had an OTTB before. Now he is in good wt using TCS and Legend Omega Plus along with cannola oil. I have had OTTB my whole life including a 21 yr old Bold Ruckus son out of a Nijinsky mare who could jump the moon and also could have an attitude if he wanted (still can buck a storm). The SC grandson (Richie) is the best mannered one that I have ever owned. Smart, quick to learn, wants to please, athletic, has a sense of humor and kind. He is a partner. He can be good feeling but still stays right at your shoulder and ships and clips great. I knew Storm Bird and he was always good around me but he could also be difficult but I think that was only because he was so smart and was not that big a fan of men, I never though he was mean. I do not know how to put a picture here. So I would not discount any SC because of a rep he has deserved or not. The Northern Dancer line has many sensitive, smart, athletic athletes that are in all shapes and sizes and make great partners.
Hope the pedigree link works as I would be curious as to the thoughts on the pedigree.

I’m looking at a colt by Bluegrass Cat has anyone had any by him ? Any comments on his pedigree for sport ? http://www.pedigreequery.com/bluegrass+cat2

I have a Tale of the Cat son (Private Account on the dam side) He has an awesome brain, is a good mover and a good looking horse. A friend who is not a big TB fan has been foxhunting him this year and is totally blown away by how adaptable, easy and intelligent he is.

Frankly, I hesitated about buying him because of the Storm Cat, but like many folks have said, look at the horse in front of you. I am sure glad I didn’t pass on this one.

I would attribute the bulk of that to the Private Account as every one of those I have ever seen (especially on the dam side) has an awesome brain, temperament and movement

How are mares that have Storm Cat in them? Most of the comments have related to geldings. I’m a mare person so if they have the same qualities as the geldings it would be great to know.

I also have a gelding by Bonus Time Cat. Do you know if there are a lot of them around?

Ditto what PlainBay asked. Here is my girl’s pedigree. She’s a Stormy Atlantic granddaughter. Thoughts?

I have a Storm Cat grandson by Exploit out of a Cherokee Run mare. He was very succesful on the track before getting hurt. He is wonderful to deal with and will jump anything. I do mostly Dressage with him due to his old fracture but when I have jumped him he never said no. He is drop dead gorgeous witha lot of chrome and has scored 67-68% at his first few shows. I wouldn’t trade him for anything!

Anecdotally, it seems Seattle Slew or AP Indy mellow out the temperament issues of Storm Cat.

I have a great-granddaughter (tail male) through Wiseman’s Ferry. I have been dealing with some chiropractic issues with her pelvis, but that is improving. Her mind is FANTASTIC, besides the fact that she is a sweet pocket pony . So far she has done everything I have asked - huge group trail rides, hunter paces, basic dressage (except left lead canter - see chiro issues), small jumps and a little event last year. I have even had a harness on her and dragged a tire behind her with no reaction.

Right now her left lead is improving as we get her pelvis straightened out, her dressage is improving, and I hope to get her driving next year.

This is her:

Not sure how the jumping will be long term, it depends on how she does as we deal with her chiro issues and on what I feel like as I haven’t had a horse to jump since 2004 , but for right now she is being the all-around horse I enjoy having.

She can be opinionated, but no more than any other mare I have had, and as long as you are fair and give her a chance to understand she is very willing to try.

Well, I said I wouldn’t look at another prospect with SC in it, but this one has appeared. What do you see in this pedigree that might soften the SC attitude? He would only be for a lower lever h/j or eventing. http://www.pedigreequery.com/big+daddy+d

IME the Storm Cat temperament is not as bad as it is often made out to be. My impression has been that the uber-publicized Tabasco Cat incident lead to a lot of his bad reputation. At least the ones I’ve dealt with haven’t been stand-outs in the temperament department, good or bad.

I just got a Storm Cat granddaughter - a 16.2hh bright chestnut OTTB mare (Flashbulb x After Market [out of Storm Cat] ) I absolutely love her!

Starting her in eventing - right now we are at dressage and she is a quick learner, relies on shoulder rubs & “good girl” to tell her she is doing the right thing. She reminds me of a GSD - you cannot drill and drill her with the same thing over and over without a “yes, that is it!” or she will start thinking of a different solution/result to get a reaction out of you. She is doing very well in dressage training, eager to please. My mare is incredibly scopey - her ears prick forward if she SEES a jump - whether it be a log outside, or a crossrail left behind in the arena. I have to keep her away from the jump or she will jump over them! I cannot wait for us to start eventing - I do not know who will enjoy it more, me or her!

Yesterday, another boarder was riding her WB over the crossrail jump and my OTTB mare was jealous! She wanted to jump so badly but right now we are working on getting her in jumping shape through basic dressage. I would buy another Storm Cat mare in a heartbeat. It has been said they are nuts, but my mare is very quiet - she has gone to the TB Celebration Show only 4 months after the track and did fantastic, did not spook once! She is actually more quiet than my 25yo Appaloosa mare

I would say Lemon Drop Kid’s influence may be the reason for your mare’s ability. Look at another Lemon Drop Kid baby, Eagle Beagle, who was an Eclipse Award winning hurdler a few years ago. It is interesting that your mare comes from the same family (8-h) as Eagle Beagle. There is also Blushing Groom in your mare’s pedigree on the sire’s side, which is often considered an asset in eventers.

My friend had an event mare who was a Storm Cat grand-daughter by Fantasticat. She was 16h, leggy, good conformation, pretty good mover and nice square knees jumping. She was level-headed and naturally very brave XC from the beginning. She evented through novice and then was sold to an amateur adult as a hunter/jumper, but not because she failed eventing. She was a good all around TB sporthorse. I also know a lady in NJ who selects Storm Cat offspring as TB show hunters because she claims they are usually pretty with good form over fences. I don’t know her horses personally.

The mare I knew was clever, easily bored, athletic as all get out, great form over a fence but opinionated and inclined to act out on it. Great horse if you could work with her, inclined to blow up if you ran her into the red zone or let her pick a fight.

Loved to be busy and adored a puzzle. I really liked her

All of the Storm Cats I’ve worked with have been sensitive, highly intelligent and highly athletic.
