Straddling a pole-help me understand what this does

 Next you’ll be scouring Facebook Marketplace for children’s gymnastics mats and wandering the countryside in search of rideable ditches. And poles. You’ll need so many poles and risers.

Hi! Thank you for starting this thread. I just bought the book and paid for overnight shipping. My pony goes into deep still points when I do bodywork (which I understand to be deep fascial releases) and will stay that way for an hour. I can’t wait to try this. Thank you to all who are contributing!!!

So now I’m thinking I’ll just get my mare straddling the pole and not try to move her down it. It sounds like it could be very relaxing.

Well that was interesting! My mare had already learned what she should do - step down the pole with 2 hooves on each side. So getting her to straddle it and then halt was not easy. The first time, she halted but then immediately moved her LH to the right side of the pole. I’m pretty sure that’s more comfortable for her, so we tried again, and eventually she was halted and straddled, not at all square, but good enough. And we stayed there
which was really confusing for her. Most interesting was that she was halted with her front hooves very wide apart.

I found I had to breathe really deeply and keep my energy down, or she’d be getting ready to move. Eventually she started licking and chewing, and after that relaxed for a bit. But she’s a “thinky” and wiggly horse, and just standing there was challenging.
