(5 years trailer sales experience) Absolutely do not remove it, usually but bars and chains attach to it, and if you removed it you would not have a pole to attach the but bars or chains to and that keeps your horses from leaning directly on the ramp or back door and potentially “springing” the latch that holds the door closed. it also provide extra support on the roof part of it and can help in a accident. I do not think you’ll really notice it much after a while, except for the hauling of items such as a mower couch etc. Look for a slant load with a removable back tack if you do no want the bar back there.

Thanks everyone. After reading through all the comments and thinking it over some more, I decided not to buy that trailer. The rear post just had too many potential concerns for me, especially as a newbie with an unproven pony. We decide to buy a 2h slant with removable/collapsible rear tack. Since our guy is small, the shorter still length in the slant should work just fine for him.
