Any update, @SonnysMom ?
No update yet. I checked on him over the weekend and he had 6 Canadian Geese back with him. I will keep an eye on him for the moment. I think as long as he has buddies he is less likely to be eaten by a fox. We have quite a few foxes in the area.
I do have somebody I used to board with that will take him. She used to have domestic geese and her last one died of old age. She has a pond and goose housing.
@SonnysMom Around here - Midwest - the Canada geese never leave.
So your guy might have company through Winter.
If they are finding food, so will he.
It seems to depend on the flock in my area. Some stay for the winter and some leave. His flock used to be about 17 geese. During the spring, summer and early fall I never saw him by himself. He was always with the Canada geese. In the last couple of weeks I saw him twice by himself with no other geese in sight. Sunday there were only 6 Canada geese with him on the pond. I donāt know if they are part of the original 17 or a different group. But it appears that about 10 of his group have gone somewhere else.
I am not as worried about him finding food. I think the foxes will be less likely to approach a group of geese but would be willing to take on a single goose. It is him being alone and target for a fox that I worry about.
I would still make an effort to catch him if itās not too much trouble for you, especially since you have a friend ready to take him. Is there obvious cover where heās hanging out? Can you drive by close to dusk and see if you can see where heās going to sleep? That would be the best time to catch him, just after dark. Iād take a nice heavy blanket to throw over him and hug him from above/behind with it.
Let me know! Just another mission for the animalsā¦
The one time I found him just after dark he was hanging out on the pond with his friends. There are a few bushes around one edge of the pond. There is a stone barn about 100 yards from the pond that seems to have an overhang that I guess they could go into.
Maybe Thursday I could snag him. I work from home that day so would be able to get there around dusk. When I work from the office I get home well after dark.
OP, youāre really going the extra mile for this goose and itās a great thing youāre doing!
All the COTH waterfowl fans are cheering you on!
I happen to love geese even though they scare me a bit since I was chased and bitten as a small child. Just thought you might want to know he or she is probably an Embden, there are not many pure white domestic geese out there. Hope you were able to catch Emmy or Emmett and thanks for caring!
@Calamber I looked up Embden goose and that is exactly what he/she looks like.
I have been calling the goose Frosty. I have only seen Frosty in the corn field by herself twice. She has been on the pond a few times by herself. The wild geese and 2 mallards seem to come and go. A few times they have been there and a few times Frosty is alone.
The 2nd time Frosty was by herself in the corn field the other geese/ducks were nowhere around. The pond was partially frozen and there were big chunks of ice and some rocks on top of the ice. Almost like somebody was throwing things at the geese. The ice/rocks were about the size of softballs. The next day the geese/ducks were back.
Since Frosty has mostly been on the pond there hasnāt been much of a chance to catch her. She was by herself yesterday morning but I put down some feed for her for Christmas brunch.
I actually donāt know if the goose is male or female so am using she for this post.
