Stuff you still want because it was cool back in the day.

I have one! Wait…edited because he does not win the hacks, but jumps 3’6" like it’s cake.

The New Cavalry Bridle! I still have several. First one bought in 1990, and several after that. I still use them, and they still get compliments. Best bridles I’ve ever used.
I bought a New Cavalry from Ebay after 2000…. because they were The Bridle in the 1990s. I still have it and I don’t regret it.

Speaking of which, I’m starting a new thread for you people who want to “fly your freak flag high” and take your Old Skool public. Look for it.

Plaited rein people:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Exselle-Brown-Plaited-English-Leather-Reins-New-/221821861718?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item33a59cff56

These aren’t from the CryoFreeze. Rather, they were born yesterday, but they are from a very old species…. like a baby shark…… young itself, but of a form that is very old because it was Evoluationarily Successful in a niche that didn’t change much over geologic time.

I think Exselle quality is good enough. That’s British leather, IIRC. But better plaited reins have more strands to 'em.

Just wouldn’t want you to buy a poor quality baby shark just because you weren’t around at the dawn of time to learn better from worse.

ETA, I trust Smith-Worthington’s renditions of old school tack in British leather. Also, you can all 'em at the Mother Ship in Hartford, CT and ask. Ruth and Curt there are very nice and know their stuff. I’d look for plaited reins from those guys if they were my thing.

If I could only FIT into my full fringe chaps!!! I’d rock em’

Ooh, I’ll play!

I always wanted a Crosby Hunterdon or Equilibrium. I have a Collegiate Equilibrium Apprentice from the days when they were made in Argentina on the Crosby blueprints and I love it. I still want the real thing.

My one dressage saddle IS ancient…BROWN, shorter flaps,no padding ancient. I ride way better in it than in my expensive, super padded Schleese.

I love the look of canary breeches and black coats. I also love brown field boots and rust breeches (back in the day I had rust breeches and the hunter green coat to go with. Awesome)

I also wish I could find a plain, flat bridle that’s finer than a hunt bridle, like we all had 100 years ago before raised became the thing (remember when GM would chastise people for anything but flat bridles in his PH Jumping Clinic article?). You can get the wide hunt bridles, but fine flat tack for the show ring is long gone. To go with it, I’d like a pair of single-laced reins. I love the way they fit your fingers and give grip without bulk.

I also love square all-wool coolers with string (NOT Irish-knit, but the old style string) coolers underneath. I’ve yet to find anything that dries and warms as quickly or efficiently.

Oh, and balding girths. Almost impossible to overtighten, looked nice, and didn’t leave rubs.

ADT still makes single laced reins!

Seriously! I drool over any and every liver chestnut that I see. One day I will own one, without a doubt. That’s my absolute favorite color EVER! I think they are STUNNING.

Ooh, I had that. 17 h OTTB mare, liver chestnut, won all the hunter and cross country, and junior jumpers. Not a stitch of white. Could walk a 4 foot course. Took her next owner to the medal macclays. I’ll see if I can pull of a photo of her.

OPK, make it my profile pic. I was 13 at the time. The mare is in the profile pic, not the bay in the header. https://www.facebook.com/cheryl.higgins.794#!/photo.php?fbid=10202895428577195&set=a.1608786310015.75898.1546923791&type=1&theater

If that doesn’t work try this one

Um… all of you liver chestnut fans… not to plug but this mare looks really promising…

My everyday boots (have decided I hate half chaps) are my sister’s Vogel field boots circa 1976. My boot jack and pulls are probably older than that. Still have my Vogels made that same year…but I was a skinny thing back then. Love my old boots. They won’t last much longer, though. I’ll be sad when I have to toss them.

I have one, but I event with him, so I am not sure he would win the hacks… and he has a small star but its not very large…

Madras plaid, rust breeches, white linen coats, and Baker!

I wouldn’t wear Newmarket boots on a horse, but maybe for fashion. They’re pretty cool looking.

Rust Breeches… or Jods back in the day.

My Dad FORCED me to wear rust. He thought it made me stand out in the ring. He didn’t understand that they clashed with my chestnut pony after I moved up off my grey pony.

Now I would give anything to wear rust again… Big faux pas in the hunter ring? Would anyone judge me if I wore rust on my chestnut mare?!

All the Baker blankets, 2-way side-zip tailored sportsmans, International “item of apparel” hunt cap with deerskin harness (if my skull were made of steel), custom full chaps, rust breeches. Crosby Prix Des Nations and Equilibrium, plain flap.

I lust for one of the old Pariani saddles from the period up to 1980 or thereabouts.

I have always wanted a traditional Witney square wool blanket.

And to the earlier poster - round leather bridles. WOW I loved those ! Hope they come back too!
I stlll have an old black round bridle and use for schooling dressage shows. It makes my guy’s head look so refined and elegant!!

I’m late to the party, but had to chime in because this thread made me overly excited

My mom has a lovely Crosby close contact saddle from the late 70s that she couldn’t bear to part with. It’s still in great condition, and now I’m tempted to try it out next time I ride. I remember using it for a few rides in the late 90s and feeling like I was tilted too far back, but now I’m curious to see how it goes now that my problem seems to be tilting forward  At the very least, my trainer will be amused.

And count me among the many lamenting the fact that you can’t find plaited reins anymore. I’m so nostalgic for them; why did they ever go away??

As far as attire is concerned, I’m waiting for canary breeches to come back in style (although they were already out of style by the time I started riding). I miss rust breeches too. And does anyone else miss the pretty black velvet hunt caps with the ribbon in the back? I do! Today’s helmets may be safer and marginally reduce head sweat, but they are not as cute as the old school velvet hunt caps.

Oh, and sign me up for a velvet hunt jacket. Now my mission is to bring that trend back to life. Maybe if we all get on board, we can make it happen!

I do not miss the CB jackets or the boot jacks. As a kid, I schooled in a CB jacket and rubber riding boots…pretty much everyone at my barn did. The jackets kept us warm while our toes froze in the rubber boots. Now I would think that those boots are safety hazards and the puffy jackets hide bad form.

Here’s one!

Don’t be put off by how cheap they are. These bridles are surprisingly soft and supple for the price.

Also, there are many British retailers on eBay who sell canary breeches for less then $100.

We skipped madras for white linen in summer. Bur what I really want is a pair of rubber-footed, canvas legged Newmarket boots.
I wanted the ones with feet and inside upper calves of leather, with the leather strap around the top. A friend had a pair in oh, 1960 or so, and boy did I love them. They were beautiful.
