Stupid question about rein sizing
I loved them until I had a jump lesson on a hot day and the sweat made them super slippery!
This happened for me too. I dont like them at all. I use the small pimple grips from bartville

re: riding with reins too long is dangerous if they loop so low that they can get hung up on a leg. The leftover loop should not be as low as your foot.

So, I keep forgetting to take an actual tape measure to the barn with me to measure my reins, but I definitely have two very different lengths of “horse” size reins (came with the bridle).

Up through the last event I went to, I was riding all three phases in a horse size Micklem and using the rubber reins that came with it, which were plenty long but not too long … However, I recently switched to a different bridle for XC and SJ, also horse size, but the laced reins that came with it are about 4" longer than those that came with the Micklem. A pair of Nunn Finer rubber reins I had hanging around are about the same length as the laced ones … Both way too long. I think for now I’ll have to switch the reins on the Micklem back and forth.

Of course, very few of the retail websites list the actual length of the reins, they just say “horse” or “pony” (and most of them don’t even offer “cob”)!

I live in the wrong half of the state to be close to Bartville Harness … Which is too bad, because I’ve always liked the Nunn Finer stuff. Maybe at some point I’ll have an excuse to be out that way.

I was just wondering what the pony length is on Bartville reins. Anybody that has them willing to measure for me? I have phone connection issues or I would call directly. My horse is my no means small, but I find the bight of my current reins a bit distracting when I’m hunting. It’s just long enough to catch on branches in tight cover.

OP, Smartpak’s staff actually measured the reins on various bridles for me and called me back with the info. It is amazing that the reins on a cob bridle are sometimes longer than the reins on a horse bridle. Manufacturers should list rein length, as well as other dimensions of a bridle.

So, to follow up on my old thread from last summer …

I ended up buying the Nunn Finer Pony Reins from Bit of Britain for my jumping bridle, and they are the perfect length for my horse and me (in spite of the fact that he’s at least a hand too big to be an actual pony!)

Thanks for bumping this up. I have the inverse problem. I’m riding a 16.1 gelding and I was confused about why the reins feel so darn short. Next time I’m out I look forward to measuring them and seeing what other options I have. It never occurred to me that rein length for “horse” varied between manufacturers!

Thank you for bumping this back up! I have the opposite problem and find myself needing XL reins for the new horse. I never thought that I would have to measure/there aren’t standard sizes. Step one, measure my reins before commencing shopping!

I needed pony reins for my 15.2 drafty mare and my 16.1 TB with a short neck. I ended up finding reins I like that are “one size fits all” but my problem finding pony reins was that the rubber part was shorter- not the leather part that attaches to then bit. I often found myself holding the stopper where rubber met leather. I ended up having a pair shortened before I found my magic size reins.

The ones I got seem to have a shorter leather part, so my hands are on the rubber where they should be …they’re just right!
