Haven’t been able to find them in the supermarket since COVID started. I ended up buying a case from Snacknation.com for the regular price ($3) versus Amazon, which had Domino Dots at $8 a box!!! (However, I believe, they are now out.)

I googled Sugar Cut Dots to find Snacknation. Maybe there are other companies out there still selling them.

I am rationing my sugar cubes to 2 a ride (one when I put the bit in his mouth and one when I dismount and he still has the bit). Who knows when they’ll come back into production and although there are alternatives (Tums, perpmints, etc), they are just not the same thing.

So my first batch of sugar “cubes” are in the fridge! We will see how they hold up in use. They are 1/2 tsp size and rounded as I molded them in the measuring spoon. They look like little gumdrops!

I used the homemade ones yesterday, they are great. I think what he did was flatten them out in a 8x8 baking pan then used a dough cutter to divide them into small squares. they are still a bit big so yesterday I just broke one in half. They aren’t too crumbly so they work great in my pocket…

I also had trouble finding them. My local grocery chain said they are indefinitely out of stock. I was able to locate them at Walmart.

Can I just say how much fun this thread is??? To finding out one can make homemade sugar cubes! (but more amazingly the hubby who did it and left the gift on the counter for you) and to all the additional suggestions too for the constant rewards our ponies MUST have! ha!!! I don’t do many ‘while riding’ (bit in) treats…man, are mine deprived. :frowning: I’ll do better!

I am a very lucky woman. He could NOT care less about horses, and probably couldn’t identify which are mine if he saw them but he did it anyways…

I’m imagining him a bit grumpy and self-righteously slaving away at midnight and grumbling a bit at “overspending on cubes” then leaving them on the counter in defiance, whispering as he does, “see…I told you…”

On another note…am I the only one that uses actual horse treats? I use Horse Snacks horse treats and in 30 years have found only one horse to not like them (there are upwards of 50 at the barn at a time). They are small like cubes, the slightly bigger ones can be torn in half, horses love them. I keep them in my pocket and horses KNOW the treat pocket. I can store them at the barn and no melting/sticky issues. I grab a handful when I get to the barn and put any unused ones back before I leave (usually, sometimes they get laundered).

An added bonus, when I make the unfriendly/unsure horses friendly through use of treats, my trainer then grabs the same treats to lure them into a false sense of security before catching them and torturing them with like being ridden or shod or trimmed or something awful.

I use actual horse treats for everything except the bridling/mounting routine…

You can make sugar cubes (and rock sugar) at home. Google will help. Making cubes go pretty fast.

Rock sugar may take a week to allow the crystals to grow but makes for a great science experiment on “super saturated solutions.”

Personally, I’m too lazy and don’t like that the cubes crumble and make a mess. I use regular human food ginger snaps cookies for horse treats. Cheap alternative.

My spoiled boy gets baby carrots or bagged horse treats when not bridled. But I like to give him a treat when he takes the bit and like something small and meltable. The soft peppermints were okay but a little big. The hard peppermints cause him to chew and suck much too long! He also gets a treat when mounting and sometimes one during the ride when he “gets it”. Sugar cubes just work best for me for those situations.

Yeah, I told you he was spoiled!

Weird. Apparently there’s still lots of sugar cubes in Maryland. I told my husband that there was a shortage so he should buy any if he saw them when he did the grocery shopping today. He bought me 4 boxes.

You will not regret that when they entirely go missing from the shelf!

Gumbits work well, tho way pricier than sugar cubes.

i did find some sugar cubes at Walmart

We had none on the shelves for about two weeks. Now they’re back in a shorter, fatter box.

I have come to like making them. Super cheap and easy. I can make them nice and small, perfect for quick treats when the bit is in his mouth!
