Patey hunt caps are custom (and beautiful), which are not approved. I don’t know if today’s approved helmets are available as a custom order though.
Back in the day - our Master had a custom fitted hunt cap and believed that it was sufficient not to fall off in a spill because it was ‘custom’ - didn’t even have a chin strap.
I aware that there are custom hunt CAPS but I do not think there is any such thing as a custom HELMET - I have never heard of one for horse back riding. I think some motor sports helmets have custom fit liners, but it would be cost prohibitive to have custom fit shells etc.
Thank goodness the hunt bought him a helmet, rather than a custom hunt cap eh? He might have died if he was wearing the “traditional hunt cap”.
I also figure it is a bid for some $$$. Here in N. America an injury like this would have a client seeking millions, not a couple of hundred thousand. Probably found out the extent of the hunts coverage and is going after that. Most insurers would rather offer a settlement than head to court where legal bills can head into the stratosphere. After doing a hunt type job for 19 seasons not knowing how to fit a helmet? Puleeeeze…
And a lot of hunt staff do love those Pateys. I will take an ASTM helmet with a harness any day.
