Thank you everyone! I can’t wait to get him home. I think he’s going to be so much fun!
He’s super cute!
Looks like he’s got quite a bit of growing and filling out to do, he’s still got that baby look.
I think you’ll fit each other just fine.
Have fun with him!
Thank you!!
Hoping to ship him here sometime during the week of the 9th! Cross your fingers for me! I can’t wait to get to know him!
He is adorable, congratulations! I’ll echo what’s already been beaten in - 16-16.1hh is not small, and you’ll be just fine.
FWIW, my OTTB mare went from 16.1hh to 16.2hh as a six year old.
Thank you! I really think he will be just fine size wise. Crossing everything anyway!
My World Champion jumper mare is 14.3. I’m 5’7’’.
But, to better answer your question, my homebred HUS filly was the same size as my western pleasure filly for a hot minute. Like, to the point I was concerned if she’d ever grow up or if I bred for a big horse and got a pony. I also had her half sibling by the same sire, who towered over her. (HUS filly [bald face overo] on the far left at 11 months, half sister next to her [sorrel with blaze] as a yearling, and the western pleasure filly poking her head over the fence in the middle at 9 months):
Her two year old year, the two younger fillies were still about the same size while the monster half sibling continued to grow.
FINALLY, this year she decided to sprout up. This is a low quality cell photo, but - the loud HUS overo filly is on the far right, next to the half sibling [sorrel with blaze] who is a true 16.3hh and still growing. Even the bald faced pleasure filly (2nd from left) is over her dam’s 15.1hh (the white mare). As an aside, I hadn’t put these two photos together before. The top was taken in 2017, and the bottom was taken a couple of weeks ago. I lost the brown mare in 2018, but otherwise it’s the same group - just in a different order.
If the scale is off, here’s the loud overo in her stall with a feed cart and a gallon of fence stain in the background for reference . She’s big boned and is finally turning into the monster of a horse that her half sibling has been from day one:
So, there is hope! Some are just slow to grow for whatever reason.
He’s been here about two months and is already growing and significantly filling out! He’s been a blast to get to know, and is like a big puppy! He’s definitely sensitive but very sensible about it, if that makes sense! I think that will easily translate into just my type of ride, so exciting! He’s about 2 and a half on the dot, so I hope he continues to grow and mature quite a bit. I’ll have to get some updated photos here soon.
Yay! I was all set to reply to this before I realized it’s an old thread. But for what it’s worth, I’m 5’7" with a long leg and a shorter upper body, and I fit on pretty much everything. Sounds like you have a great young horse!
Thank you so much! He’s really been just lovey!
Here’s a quick update! He’s doing really, really well and is definitely growing! I have to put a stick on him but I’d say he’s 15.2HH+ at this point and is butt high. Hoping the video attachment works here as well as he’s moving even better then previously.
Anyone with more experience looking at young horses than I have, do you think he has a good bit of growing to do? After playing with him this weekend I’m even more convinced that even if he doesn’t get to a size I need, he’ll be pretty easy to move along. Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts!

String test him - the old school way. Measure from his elbow to his ergot/fetlock with a string. Then “flip” the string, rotating from the elbow and raising the bottom part of the string up, vertical and taut, aligned with the wither. It should end up at roughly his final height.
Thanks! He currently string tests to 16.1+ a little bit. His full brother was 17hh but neither parent is that big. I know it’s all a crap shoot, just trying to educate myself as much as possible!
Adorable! He still looks very much like a baby. <— this is my 100% scientific way of observing that he has some growing to do!
He should fill out nicely and take up your leg. I am not quite 5’5", but I have no torso and long legs. My WB is just a smidge over 16hh and takes up more leg than my 16.3hh TB, who is actually built pretty big, but just doesn’t have the chonkiness of my other guy. I wouldn’t stress about it too much. WB babies tend to fill out a lot in their 5-6 year, and if his movement is already what you want, I’ll bet he is going to be perfect for you!
Thank you so much!
