I am in shorts as soon as possible. Just lift the hay bale up and prop it on your hip. You’ll have great arms. And your farmers tan legs will match your farmers tan arms.
OP congrats on the job!!

Ugh, please, stop perpetuating this myth that steel toe boots cause or make injuries worse. They do not. Produce citations if you really believe the facts are on your side. It’s just really irresponsible to advise someone against wearing standard safety equipment because of something you heard once somewhere.
The reality that if your ST boot were crushed by some weight greater than its specification, your entire foot would have been absolutely crushed anyway had you not been wearing it. Depending on the rating, most steel toe boots withstand a compressive force of 1700-2500 lbs. One hoof of your horse is not going to ever reach that.

Yes, I have the shorts. They’re nice and breathable but the others are more durable.
I tend to gravitate towards cheap leggings or riding tights. I do loooove the Kerrits Ice Fill tights, especially since they have a pocket for my phone. I wear tank tops mostly, with plenty of sunscreen (it’s like 90+ in the summer, and I sweat like a pig, especially when I’m working). I definitely second bringing extra socks! I use old tennis shoes as summer barn shoes, and my socks tend to get wet/smelly/dirty fast.
Well, if you’re working with big warmbloods or draft horses and they do something obscenely stupid as horses are won’t to do, it’s not completely out of the question.
I like scrubs or jeans that are so old they are worn very thin. I will wear shorts that are almost knee length. Mountain biking ones are usually tough and breathable and have decent pockets and expire not being Walmart cheap will end up cheaper in the long run because they last for years and wash up like new over and over.
If you’re going to be stacking small bales make sure you have scrubs or jeans and a long sleeved shirt with you.
