I’ve ridden in the TS and it works for 70-80 degree weather but after 80 I get too hot. I’ve heard from a friend who owns both that EIS is way better. Sadly, I have yet to try one on.
I have the EIS shirts and love them. I live in coastal SC, so it is very hot and humid here. I wear them from about April to October.
I have 5 EIS ones. I am sporting the hand tan this year and every year from now on. I usually ride with gloves even in the summer and I usually wear my equi visor over my helmet as well.
I would like to report back and say that I felt significantly cooler in my TS sunshirt vs a polo today.
I really like my TS Icefil sunshirt. Really, really like it. And I’m riding in south FL in 85% humidity plus full sun - it keeps me cool and dries very quickly. It’s also very flattering. I’d love more in more colors!

In some states that is the only option for many months.
Oh. I just got it. You mean it should say Fahrenheit.
Lol if I didn’t ride when it was over 85 I would only be able to ride two weeks out of the year!! South Florida is not horse friendly. 100% humidity and 100 degrees. Might as well be the amazon!
My current favorite is an Ex Officio sun-shirt – look at Sierra Trading Post for good prices, and sign up for their email offers so you’ll get the discount codes.
I used to prefer Columbia sun shirts, but they redesigned them and changed the front pockets to useless tiny decorative things.
I have a couple of LL Bean’s shirts, but the fabric is too thick for summer wear. It feels like nylon, and it’s hot. Those get used for outdoor work in spring/fall.
I just bought the new Kastel yesterday & rode all my horses today in 80+ degree weather (already hot here in Houston). It is a lot lighter & softer than the ESI’s. Even the dark ones are cooler in the sun. I make sure I’m covered up due to a skin cancer scare a few years back.
Okay, so, sunshirt fans, awkward question: do you just wear a sports bra underneath? I feel weird not wearing anything else under a 3/4 zip top for some reason, but a regular tank top would cancel half the benefits of the shirt, right? Maybe a jogging-style camisole from the same fabric?
I wear the Columbia fishing gear shirts. With a sports bra, to answer Metropolitans question. Never tried the different riding brands.
I can’t say it keeps me cool, but it doesn’t make me any hotter than I would normally be. I live in south florida as well so I’m very used to being hot. Much better than slathering in sunscreen though!

I just returned my TS Icefil sun shirt - I am 5’11 and although I absolutely LOVED the fabric and how cool it was it was not even barely long enough for me. I got the XL and it still wouldn’t stay tucked in. My last horse show it was flying all over the place - embarrassing! Felt like I was wearing a belly shirt half the time! haha So I wouldn’t recommend this shirt for taller or people with longer torsos! The person at the tack store that I returned it to told me that I wasn’t the first person to have the same complaint about it. I absolutely LOVE the shirt but they need to make it longer!
I personally really like the Ariat Sunstopper - it’s so lightweight and the fit is great! I also picked up a Tredstep Symphony shirt as well and I have yet to try it out but the fabric is very similar to the TS one. I got the short sleeve this time but they do make it in long sleeve!
I’ve tried the following:
Smartpak Sunshield: I’m really short and this shirt is short on me. I also find it hot unless I’m sweating. The seams are itchy, so I have to wear a tank or camisole under it.
TS: I love this one. Fit well. I did size up though. I really liked the fabric but have not tried it out in super hot heat.
Riding Sport: I just got this and have not ridden in it. I did like the fit but the fabric is not as nice as the TS.

So Rugbug, have you noticed that you can get tan through the little white mesh pieces on the back?. I wear mine a lot and was drying my hair when I noticed I had two tan strips on my shoulders. I was like “WTF?? Oh yea…”
This happened to me last year!!!
To answer someone’s question, I do wear just a sports bra underneath. I find that if you wear anything else it really defeats the purpose of the cooling/wicking fabric.

Yep, just a sports bra. I honestly don’t think that in humid climates they do a better job of keeping you cool than a loose cotton shirt, but they do a better job of keeping sun off your skin and preventing sunburn. In a hot, non-humid climate, I’ve been really pleased with the performance of the Columbia ones I have, along with the Patagonia Cap 1 shirts (I’ve not worn them in hot, non-humid climates to ride, only for hiking/bouldering; I live/ride in a hot, humid climate and don’t notice much temperature difference riding.) I prefer the Columbia ones, only because they are zip neck and not regular scoopneck shirt style like the Patagonias are; I live 3 seasons in the Cap 3 shirts from Patagonia, with the zip necks. I find those do a good job of regulating my temperature levels up to about 70, then I switch to short sleeves or summerweight shirts as appropriate.
I wear a white Columbia shirt for dressage when its warmer, under my jacket; with a stock tie over it, you don’t notice it’s not a regular shirt. I also find their sleeves to be nice and long, which is great as a tall person.
I have one of the EIS shirts - definitely runs small and short, and it is a rather boxy fit. Not the most flattering shirt I own (on my body type, at least). I wouldn’t say I feel cooler in it than I would wearing something sleeveless, but I do not feel any warmer wearing the EIS than I would wearing something sleeveless.
I much prefer the fit of the Ariat shirts for me.
I have a bunch of different shirts - I have four of the Swing shirts from Bette & Court, and I LOVE them. I bought them last July in Atlanta, and you can’t get more hot and humid than that. I wore them to show in Charleston in July as well, and also they were fantastic - they don’t run nearly as short or as small as the EIS shirts - much more true to size. I also like that the Swing shirts don’t have a cuff on the sleeves, and they don’t have that annoying “bib” underneath the zipper - more fabric = hotter.
I show in the jumpers, so other than on Sunday for money classes, I show exclusively in the Swing shirts with breeches. I’ve been scouring eBay trying to find some more at a discount, because I ADORE these shirts, but can’t stand paying $75 a pop. I’ve had them almost a year, and they launder great, have held up beautifully, don’t stink, and really do make a difference in heat, no matter how hot and humid it gets. It’s nice that they dry fast too.
I used to be exclusively a polo girl, but once I started wearing these shirts, there is no going back!
I have one of the Wellington collection also - a little smaller and shorter than the Swing Shirts, but not bad, just not my favorite, although the price is nicer. I have one of the Kerrits Ice Fil shirts, which is what originally convinced me that these shirts were the way to go in the summer - they run even bigger, especially in the sleeves, and I wouldn’t show in it, but it’s great for around the barn.
I also have several of the Under Armour Tech 1/4 zip shirts, that I get from the outlet store for around $25-30 - great for riding and working around the barn, but not show quality - I’d probably vote for those for everyday.
I’ve been thinking about trying the Ariat one, since I wouldn’t mind having a few more at a slightly lower price point. But I might end up going back to the well for a few more from Swing…
Oh, and wanted to add - I just wear a sports bra underneath - anything else would defeat the point. The zip doesn’t come down low enough that you would have a problem with showing anything off to someone who shouldn’t see it!
I just bought a couple of the Swing shirts from www.sxgolf.com. They have a 10% off coupon and it makes them around $68/shirt. Still pricey, but hey-every little discount helps! They have a good selection of colors as well.
Here is what I have…
Bette & Court Swing - The material is lovely. Just bought it and haven’t worn it yet so can’t comment on anything else. People say they love them though.
TS Icefil shirt - I really like it but think that it could maybe get a bit sticky on your skin if it was really hot outside. I haven’t worn it in 90 degree+ heat yet.
Dover Riding Sport - I like the fabric on this one better than the TS fabric, it is a little looser in the arms, so not sticking to your arms if you start to sweat. A nice shirt for a really good price.
I am dying to get one of the Kastel shirts. The fabric is so soft and light to the touch. Next horse show I will snatch one up!

Say what? I’d really say that is too hot to be riding, and if you did ride, you and your horse would be burned to a crisp!!!
LOL oops!!! I had Friday afternoon brain
