Oh my… oh my… (dare I ask…) --really? Thank the Lord I didn’t go to a smart school. I like cheers that are along the lines of “Beat The Hell Outta t.u.!” I find it much more on my intellectual level.

Yes, that’s the beginning of an actual MIT cheer. I forget the next part, but somewhere in there is “Slipstick, Slide Rule, M! I! T!”

There is a story, possibly apocryphal (as so many of the best stories tend to be) that at some point, the MIT basketball team imported cheerleaders from some local junior college, there not being a vast pool of cheerleader material from which to chose among the MIT students (when I was there, the ratio of men to women was 18 to 1, and few of us were inclined towards cheerleading). Anyway, at half-time, the imported JuCo bunnies scurried out onto the floor with their pom-poms and started in:

Gimme an “M” (crowd: “M”)
Gimme an “A” (crowd: “A”)
Gimme an “S” (crowd: “S”)
Gimme another “S” (crowd: “S”)
Gimme an “A” (crowd: “A”)
etc.

Half-time was over and they were booted off the floor before they finished spelling it all out.
