Superb! Four-in-Hand on the Roads of England

Look at how this driver and his horses handle the roads and traffic of England! Don’t you wish you were onboard for this ride?

And as an added note, this is the first time on the road for these horses. Great training by the driver!

Amazing video!

I’d never heard of a hammerhead hitch, but I know so little about driving that is not too surprising.

Also nice to notice how respectful the auto traffic was - no zooming past, no hornblowing, plenty of space left behind the carriage…

The heck with on board, I wish I was driving. I miss road driving.

I have heard of the 5-horse hitch called the pickaxe, so hammerhead is new to me. Must be a UK and USA difference.

The traffic shown was polite, but UK folks say that is not always the case with driven horses and ridden horses. They also have the folks who “just can’t wait” and cause problems. I seem to remember Thomas commenting on car traffic problems when he would go driving with horses in various places.

Originally the term “pickaxe” has been used for the heavy carts, where in front of one wheeler two leader have been hitched.

The term “hammerhead” is new for me, too, but it describes the hitch well.

We here in Germany just say “five-in-hand”.
