Supplements - so overwhelmed!

Haha not scared! Just busy. The previous owner told me she had her on specific smartpaks simply because she thought they were good choices. Money was no object. She was on $160 worth of smartpaks a month. Two wells of joint supplement, probiotic, vitamin E, flaxseed. I’m thinking of switching over to the PPCJ.

I use Feed XL to balance my horse’s diet according to her scientifically determined nutritional needs. It’s an online program that compares what you are feeding to the key nutrients the horse needs in its diet. It doesn’t sell any feed or supplements, so there is no bias from that perspective. Anything supplements I give beyond that are based on a specific need determined by a blood test or clear behavioral symptoms. Based on that, my horse get a magnesium supplement (clear behavior signs of deficiency) and a multivitamin that includes selenium & vitamin E because my area (and therefore the hay) is very deficient and most manufactured feeds do not provide enough even when fed at the recommended amounts. I feed above minimum amounts of very high quality grass hay (not suitable for free feeding) along with recommended amounts of a feed that is high fat and fiber and fairly concentrated high calorie with good protein/amino acids. The provides well for my moderate keeper horse in fairly strenuous work.
