The tough part is he’s young. It’s easier when they are old. But your moment of truth came yesterday. By euthanizing him now you are putting him out of the pain, and preventing him going anywhere (without you) where he would not get the loving care you have given. Sorry you are going through this.Better times are ahead for both of you. As far as the guilt, don’t beat yourself up. You are a responsible horse owner unfortunately dealing with the final duty of a responsible horse owner.

It’s not guilt. It’s grief. There is nothing to be guilty about. You are easing him out of a painful life. His youth is immaterial. Hugs to you. I have a 30yo retiree… every season I wonder if this will be the time. She will let me know.
