Surpass and Equioxx? Give together?

My old mare is on a full dose of Equioxx for pain, but it isn’t helping as well as i like. My equine dentist suggested adding Surpass on alternating days. 1 full dose of equioxx, the next day do surpass etc. My mare had DSLD in both hinds, but appears more painful in the right hind (the more swollen leg).

Would it be possible to do half a dose of equioxx with the surpass? Surpass only works about 6 hours. Even if i use surpass 2x daily, I’m not certain it will provide enough relief.

Thoughts on pain management in a horse like this? I’m also considering applying dmso with dexamethasone to the swollen leg.

Goal here is to keep her as comfortable as possible. I do think she does look more comfortable (1 week in) after starting the alternating day treatment.

Anyone?

Very little diclofenac is absorbed systemically when applied topically–it’s like single digit percentages–so I wouldn’t worry about using Surpass on top of Equioxx. Certainly watch her for signs her belly is bothering her, but I think you’re pretty safe.

I know nothing about science and vet care! Nevertheless, I’mfairly certain that I used equinox and surpass at the same time for a bad hind suspensory. I am currently using equinox and ace 2x daily for laminitis. Horse is doing well so amending 1/2 equinox per day. Not a problem.

Ditto. This is one of those quality of life over quantity of life decisions. If the horse isn’t happy on one med alone, but can be made happy on two, I’m all for it.

I’ve used Surpass and Equioxx together long-term on an older horse with no issues.

Okay Great! Thank you!
