Swelling and lameness - reinjured?

The previous owners said they’re in the financial position to pay for vet bills and such. The two girls are both in vet school and thus have lots of connections for care and treatment. She’d be out on pasture till they get home in the summer then they’d evaluate and take her where she needs to go.

I spent $205 at vet for the reproductive exam (not including specialist visits prior) and they said it could be up to another $400 for lameness exam, ultrasound, radiographs, blocking, etc. She didn’t whack herself at the vet - I was watching the whole time. Swelling was noticed when I care out the following evening.

Well, it’s Friday…do we get an update?

Urge caution on cancelling it, if it’s not too late, unless you have firm date when old owners will come get her, such things have a way of getting pushed back again and again for reasons that seem legit but don’t solve your problem, Like " wait until they are home from school in 6 weeks" or something, during which you still are spending on a lame horse you can’t ride. Pin them down before you celebrate.

In my very long experience with horses, even well meaning people say all sorts of things you can’t count on ever happening.

Please give us closure.

Vet did an ultrasound on the area and sure enough, there is a second lesion (different than first injury) in the lateral branch of the suspensory that’s a 50% tear. Additionally, she has tendinitis of the DDFT causing all the swelling. Vet said it was highly unlikely that she’ll come sound but that she’s comfortable enough for retirement.

The previous owners are picking her up Monday. They have appointments for ESWT, PRP, etc. as well as corrective shoeing. They are excited to be able to pamper her and try to get her comfortable.

That’s great news for both the horse and you. There’s was nothing you could do with this. It’s hard to swallow the disappointment but take it as a learning opportunity in your journey with horses. Then eyes up to look for what’s next.

Lucky mare there. Lucky you too.

Well, Dawn went to her new home today. They took her to the vet for ESWT on the way home and she settled in immediately with her childhood friend. She’s happy and content! So thankful but grieving still…
