Switched to TOTW dog food. Dogs now starving?

Yep, and why my IR mare can’t have carrots!

I feed the Tractor Supply version of TOTW and my 7 chihuahuas don’t seem to “love” it. They are all in good weight and have free choice food available all the time. Nobody fights to get to the trough. They have eaten nearly every kind of “good” dry food. The things that make them beg are cherry tomatoes, cucumbers , apples and bananas. Those cause a feeding frenzy.

We recently adopted a dog from a family who didn’t want him anymore. They said that he wasn’t food motiivated at all, that he would leave food in his bowl sometimes and just didn’t seem interested. That all changed when he started eating TOTW at my house. Now he practically does back flips while I’m getting his food ready.

Cluck, good suggestion. Although the BBW comes in at approximately 38% carbs and the FreshPet is around 25%. So it may be the other way around. We will be seeing the vet soon for a general check up and I will ask her about it.

Wendy, in looking at the ingredients I am just guessing that also contributing to it may be a combination of the fiber, although BBW is around 6.5% fiber also, and the fat, BBW 15% as opposed to FP at 22%. I thought of the moisture also, even though I always float the kibble in 2 c. warm water for her. Maybe the difference in composition?

My vet recommendation was higher protein, fat as close to 15% as possible so as to not aggravate pancreas, and as low carb as reasonable.

Sorry, OP, I didn’t mean to hijack your thread. I was just relating my experience with the FP in case your brother might want to try adding some of it to help the doxies.

Grazing- dogs graze when the grass tastes good, you’ll often see “seasonal” grazing when sugar-rich new growth appears. Sometimes dogs with upset stomachs will frantically graze. If a particular food seems to make your dog frantically graze, yeah, you should switch, something isn’t right. Just because a food looks good on paper doesn’t mean it’s good for your particular dog.[/QUOTE]

This is an interesting point. My two are in LOVE with the clumps of lush green ryegrass that has popped up in the backyard this winter. They run out and rip up chunks of it! I don’t see them graze as much in the summer… but if they do, it’s usually the lusher, taller grass the grows up along the fence when we don’t “weedeat” the yard. And I can’t tell that the grazing has necessarily increased or decreased with different foods (Chicken Soup, Canidae, Natural Balance, TOTW, etc)

I must be the only one who had a bad experience with TOTW! My boxer didn’t like it, and lets just say ah…had some bathroom issues after eating it. I introduced it very slowly and tried it out for about a month. I ended up throwing 3/4 of the bag away!
