I think my posts are getting eaten again so apologies if something similar show up twice.
I think you are confusing expensive boot person (me) with TB who won all sorts of things person (not me)
Fwiw, my horse crossties, straight ties, ground ties, knows about half a dozen hand signals, self loads, and backs willingly step by step on vocal command. Amazingly she is able to do all of this despite me wearing my expensive boots. Equipment has nothing to do with horsemanship. If it did there would be a whole lot more better trained and better mannered horses wearing rope halters
@sascha no I wasn’t confusing you two in my head But my post wasn’t clear. And it’s so refreshing to hear someone say their horse ties! Too bad she can’t stand on her head at the same time. Take care of those boots now, we wouldn’t want horseshite on them.
I’ve read this thread ad I’m sorry for bumping it, but the idea of tack lockers in the stalls intrigues me. I can’t say I’d be a fan of the door opening into the stall only, but like someone else mentioned… what about a rolltop door into the aisle? People can still tack up in their stalls if that’s what you’re hell bent on, but it reduces the chance of horses hip-checking the door or otherwise injuring themselves in a spook. That way, you get the tack locker attached to the stall without doors opening into the alley, the boarder is only slightly inconvenienced by going outside their stall for supplies but that inconvenience is cancelled out by the increased safety to the horse, the horse doesn’t make a mess of the aisles, the aisle lighting can provide light for the tack lockers and everyone is happy!
Since I will be building most of the stalls myself, I will have some time to test out my tack locker idea in a couple stalls first. If it works great, if I find that it doesn’t, I’ll figure out something else.
I think the premise of what the OP wants was not quite as general the title states.
The question was, having extra room behind the stalls, how would that work for individual tack lockers, knowing that they would have to open into the stall itself?
Given that special situation, one answer is, why not and some disadvantages, that may not weight as much as being able to use that extra room, that would go unused otherwise.
With that in mind, well, why not having some kind of tack locker there?
Just make it as safe and convenient as possible, within the disadvantages of needing to go thru the stall to access it and the horse having access to the door.
My mare loves to bang on the walls with her hooves while she rolls… So the tack locker door would suffer.
She also like to shit on the North-East wall… and pee in the South corner. (Almost not kidding) She’s a Fengshui mare or something. Depending where the locker in the stall would be; half chances are that there would be pee or poop on the doorknob.
I don’t care tacking in my stall, but I prefer my stuff off of any horse’s reach.
