Tack Trunk Recommendations

Are the Stanley trunks still available? I see the Husky version is in stock at Home Depot, but the Stanley version states it is out of stock and cannot be ordered. I used to have the Stanley version and loved it. (Sold it when I downsized and moved.)

Walmart has it. I don’t really think it matters which, all these rubber trunks are a godsend.

Equitex makes a nice cover for it, get that and call it a day.

Interesting I’ve never seen them shown as completely out of stock like that before. Dewalt is also available at Home Depot. Any of the three are great, Husky, Stanley, or Dewalt. Looks like Lowe’s now has a Craftsman version.

I have a gorgeous and very expensive Phoenix West from my previous barn. While it had a cover it was still beat to hell from all the loading and unloading into the trailer to go to shows. Things have fallen on it in the trailer and dented it, grooms put my name on it with nasty old duct tape that won’t seem to come off, it has no wheels and when my horse died and I moved out, it added insult to injury to have to lift that mofo into the back of the pickup truck and take it home.

My new barn doesn’t have a host of grooms to pack the trailer, and is more hands-on which I prefer. The barn uses those Stanley trunks with nice trunk covers. Looks just as nice and it’s

  1. way cheaper than getting a new trunk or attempting to reskin and repaint my existing one
2 a heck of a lot easier to move around
  2. has a LOT more space
  3. looks nearly the same with the cover on it

My $$$$ Phoenix West in in my garage. Nicest Garage storage chest ever!!!

If the nice lightweight airline trunks looked nicer I would consider them but they are pricey and they honestly look cheap to me.

If you’re dead set on wood with some options for internals, I cannot recommend Bird Song Tack Trunks enough. I have two- one is a moderate size that used to travel when I did a lot of showing. The other monster was one I used when I was moving to another continent, and now it holds ALL THE THINGS in front of my stable.

Even though this is an ancient thread that got resurrected, I figure I’d add my $0.02, in case anyone who is currently shopping sees it. I have this trunk from SmartPak in Medium.

It is beautiful and really well made, but I would not buy it again because, even empty, it is heavy as all get out. I would get something smaller and lighter, with no bandage lid, if I had to do it all over again.

Most big box stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot have some version of the 50 gallon Stanley. I own a DeWalt, a Husky and a few Stanleys. I use black duct tape to cover ugly logos. I swear by these for travel while my McGuinn lives at the barn

my husband got plans and built ours. bandage lid, cubby for helmet and sliding draw…love it

Honestly if you have basic tools and know how to use them, buy $75 worth of wood and build your own. Ask around, you’d be surprised, maybe dad, grandpa, neighbor man (or woman), etc… I cringe when people pay $500+ for a basic tack trunk.
