Spritz a little rubbing alcohol in your helmet after you ride! Dries it and keeps it fairly odorless.
Also, baby powder is a life saver for sweaty hair! You could even sprinkle a tiny bit in your helmet so it doesn’t smell.

I have an entire little room to myself at my barn and it’s a disaster, so I won’t try to comment on something entirely out of my grasp; however, dry shampoo is a miracle. Unless the gal with the hairdryer is washing (or at least rinsing) her hair with water, the dryer doesn’t make much sense to me - is she just drying the sweat? If I am sweaty after a ride and want to look like an adult human who has her s#!* together, I towel my hair to dry it out, let it air out a bit out of the helmet, dry-shampoo, and brush. Depending on the level of sweat and how terrible it looked pre-helmet, sometimes this makes it nice enough to leave down. Other times, it makes my bun/ponytail look less gross.
Works a treat.
I am 100% an idiot with normal female things - makeup, hair, etc - yet I LOVE dry shampoo!!!

Dry shampoo is a gift from the gods. Woke up late for work and don’t have time to shampoo/blow dry? Dry shampoo. Going out right after work on 2nd day hair? Dry shampoo. Gone riding and then need to go to the grocery store/meet friends for drinks/go out to dinner? Dry shampoo.
So I am the only person who has never used (or really heard of) dry shampoo?

I hadn’t until two years ago, but it is a game changer!! It won’t do much if your hair is like 5 days post wash, but on second (or third!) day hair, or sweaty but otherwise clean hair it is an actual miracle. It’s like $8 at the drugstore. Spray it on your roots, scrub your fingers in your hair like you were shampooing, and brush out. It’s amazing.
This is the best dry shampoo! I have a big bottle in my bathroom, one in my car, and I bring a little one to shows in my trunk.
I remember when that stuff (psssssst) came out. I want to say 1970s. I had no idea they were still selling it.
I remember the ads. Here’s one I just found from 1968:
I use Aveeno, but my friend swears by Batiste: http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod2040049# so I’m going to have to give it a try next time I need to get a new can. And they have lots of different scents and even color-depositing formulas!!! Wooo!!!
See!!! I KNEW I’d learn some tricks…
#1 - DRY SHAMPOO!! I had no idea, and I do sweat from my head so this might be a game changer for me. BC I know I look ridiculous in my soaking wet hair twisted up into a bun after riding but other than a baseball hat (which usually just annoys me) I didn’t know I had an option! YAY!!
#2 - spare keys!!
#3 - Baby wipes – why hadn’t I even thought of this simple solution to wiping the sweat and grime off my face after a ride?
I do spray my helmet with the alcohol hanging in the grooming stalls – it works awesome. I even spray my hairnets in between washes - which is probably pointless since I was chucking it in loose after.
I, too, am a container person. I also label things. I have a sharpie and some colored electrical tape in my trunk for items that aren’t already monogrammed, have a name plate, or painted in my barn colors (I love matchy-matchy).
I have a barn trunk and a show trunk and have duplicates of everything. After each show I make sure everything is neat, clean, and things are refilled (fly spray, shampoo, hoof oil, etc).
I like to put “like” items together in containers. For my barn trunk, I keep a small cosmetic type bag in the tray of my trunk that has hair stuff, some band-aids, safety pins, etc.
I have a tupperware with first-aid supplies and one with clippers and their accessories. My grooming tray is fully stocked so everything that I use regularly is easily accessible.
One trick for my saddle soap: I take a 1 cup tupperware container and cut a glycerine bar into chunks and microwave it for about 30 seconds. It melts and then rehardens. You can then just remelt and refill as it gets low.

Just don’t bother with the herbal essences one…bought it on a whim, total waste of money!
Back to tack trunk organization…one of our local As had a bunch of fabric Ikea drawer organizers as a prize a few years ago. I picked up some and set them up in the tray of my trunk. I’ve got one for braiding stuff, one for hairnets/bobby pins, etc., another for boot polishing items…really keeps things from going haywire! The ones I have aren’t for sale anymore but there are some other even better plastic options:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70177477/
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60177473/
And of course wandering the aisles of the Container Store is its own treasure trove of organization ideas. Drawer/Pantry Organizers are fabulous and I think I’m gonna upgrade soon!
During the winter I often go from riding in the a.m. to work, but since I have my own office, I get changed and cleaned up on that end. I keep a hair dryer and straightening iron at work, absolutely. Makes sense to have one at the barn, if that fits your itinerary better. Especially if you want to wash your hair at the shower rack which I have never done. Yet.
This is the XL version of what I have. http://www.containerstore.com/s/storage/smart-store/x-large-smart-store-system-tote/12d?productId=10030815[/QUOTE]
Oh how I wish I had a Container Store near me! These containers look fabulous! It would be so easy to organize a first-aid kit, clippers, and other miscellaneous items with these. I think having a similar size/shape of containers makes it easier to stack.
I have three of something very similar to these: http://www.amazon.com/Sterilite-14138606-Layer-Stack-8-Inch/dp/B00NIVBEDA
One is for first aid (bandages/gauze/vet wrap on bottom, thermometer/bandage scissors, etc on top). One is for “misc” things like bot knives, extra clipper blades, mane combs, etc. And one is for me–lip balm, advil, bandaids, sunscreen, etc.
I also have three of something very similar to these: http://www.walmart.com/ip/6-Sterilite-16268006-Large-Ultra-Plastic-Storage-Bin-Organizer-Baskets-White/40589908
Mine are a little sqaur-er, so they fit nicely into corners of my trunk. One has bottles of things (fly spray, shampoo, hoof dressing, stain removers (grey mare!) etc). One has polo wraps and leg wraps. The third is buried down in the depths of my trunk (which, admittedly, is quite giant) and holds things like brushes, shedding blades off season, and other random stuff that I do not use very often and should probably just cull.
I do not keep a hair dryer in my tack trunk, but I do keep soap and a couple of people-towels, as well as deodorant and hair gel (short hair). We used to go out as a group after lessons on Wednesday nights.

People go five days with out washing their hair? I am pretty sure I can not go three days with out washing my hair because on the second day it is already bothering me.
I will have to look into this stuff, it sounds interesting.
A tack trunk thing - paper. A small pad of paper of some type and something to write with. There never seems to be any paper to write on at the barn when you need it.
I certainly wouldn’t go 5 days with no wash (well, I might end up single if I did ) but some folks with very textured hair go on a once/week schedule. I, on the other hand have very very straight, smooth hair. Two days is generally my max, but I can stretch two three with my beloved dry shampoo!
I was using Tupperware containers and had a bit of a mildew issue – really unexpected in the DRY climate I live in. So I switched to those mesh lingerie bags – something like this
They breathe, things like gloves can dry. I also put a tub of DampRid in the bottom of my trunk. Really helps.
Oh yeah, baby wipes and a spare set of keys are great to keep in your trunk! And a cell phone charger! I’ll have to go through my trunk this weekend and take inventory of all the weird but practical stuff that I have in it.

I only wash my hair twice a week - Mondays and Thursdays usually. Unless something happens that makes it particularly nasty. I’ll rinse it in between, but I don’t wash it with shampoo.
