Talk to me about Basenjis please....

Thanks guys. I really do appreciate this. I’m not in a rush, it’s more of a sounding board that I’m looking for (which you are so generously providing).

My Grandmother had basenjis. She loved them, and I remember them from when I was young. They weren’t crazy affectionate but they liked to be with you, and I like that.

I guess at the end of the day I’m looking for something smaller and easier to travel with. Both my guys are 70lbs, and while they travel well it’s tough just because of their size. I also want something a little less clingy…

I worked for a boarding dog trainer for three years, and one of his client dogs was a female Basenji. She’d been through the training program and came in to board a few times each year.

Hallie was very well behaved, calm, and friendly; I suspect that her demeanor was a product of both selective breeding and the fact that she was very well trained and socialized starting early. Other dogs didn’t bother her at all, though she never seemed to seek them out. A very “easy” dog, from what I remember. But again, her owners had put a lot of effort into the selection, training and socialization.

I can certainly share my grandfather’s (he was an AKC Obedience judge) opinion on Basenjis: “The definition of ‘masochism’ is to train a Basenji for competition obedience…” (He preferred to train spaniels and retrievers.)
