Talk to me about going to a jumper show for the first time

Hmm, I can name at least a few AA shows that I have been to that do not have separate warm ups for multiple rings.

Where? Pretty sure it’s required, and everywhere I go, stewards enforce it pretty strongly.

Yes. It a requirement of a sanctioned USEF H/J show to have a designated warm-up arena for each competition arena.

See HJ106 2.c

To be fair, that rule doesn’t say that each ring has to have completely separate warm-up areas, just that a warm-up must be designated. And at premier competitions hunters, jumpers and ponies must have separate warm-ups. So you could still have the 0.65m jumpers sharing a warm-up with 1.0m+ jumpers or 2’ hunters sharing with 3’ hunters. Most HITS shows have shared warm-ups between multiple rings (Ocala, Saugerties, Culpeper).

FYI, I’d love to have B shows in my area with multiple jumper rings. We barely have any B shows that offer jumpers at all, and when they do we can barely fill a combined child/adult class.

Yes AA rated shows which are associated as being premier; require separate warm-up arenas by the USEF.

AA shows are not associated as being premier, premier is the correct terminology. USEF changed the nomenclature several years ago.

From the rule you referenced:
c. Schooling Area or Warm-up Area: A designated area on the competition grounds in which horses are being prepared to compete. A schooling area is required to be designated with signage and on the facility map for each competition ring, and located in close proximity to the competition ring it serves. Premier competitions must offer a separate schooling area for hunters, jumpers and ponies if running concurrently.

The requirement to designate a schooling area for each ring does not mean that those schooling areas cannot be shared. I can designate Schooling Ring A for Hunter 1 and also designate Schooling Ring A for Hunter 2. The only difference for premier competitions is that you can’t mix hunters/jumpers/ponies in the same schooling area.

We’ve gotten really off topic. I hope the OP has a good and successful experience at their show!
