Talk to me about Locking Stifles

I would like to add that I don’t have a good way to condition her as I was told not to work her on a circle and I do not have a large riding area that I can pony her in. She’s on 24/7 turnout with a herd and they move around pretty well on about 10 acres.

She’s the 3yo right?

You might have missed thing again:
“You might have missed my original post - what’s going on such that the 3yo might not have long, what meds is she on, and the other is only cleared for “light work”?”

Do you have access to a horse who knows how to pony? And then teach this one to be ponied? That would be a low impact non-weight bearing way to get some conditioning on her.

I put in one of my responses that she is not on any pain meds because the vet did not think she was uncomfortable when she was last seen and as stated in my last posting, I do not have a large enough riding area to pony her in. She does pony, my mare will allow me to pony off of her, but the area I have is not big enough, they’re basically on a circle the whole time. If I’m working on anything above basics I have to haul to a farm I work at or an arena nearby and I currently do not have an operational trailer.

If you would like to properly address the stifle issues, please seek the input of a lameness vet. I would at least get a few x-ray views and possibly an ultrasound if warranted. It sounds like you will need to make some adjustments to how and where you ride the horse if you want her to improve. Many horses have the UPF issue along with joint soreness from the sticking. It can take a combination of a few different treatments to make a difference.

Up to you, but I’d at least start with Adequan or Pentosan and consider Equioxx too, at least for the time you are trying to strengthen and condition her. Other options for treatment include blistering the stifle ligament (medial patellar ligament), splitting the ligament, as well as joint injections.

The horse with the severe issue IS NOT being ridden and never will be due to all of her issues. The horses I do ride are not lame, they have no issue with where and how I ride.

The horse with the milder issue will not be ridden until I can consult with his previous vet and either confirm the information I have been given by the previous owner or get the correct information. I wouldn’t put it past the previous owner to lie to me to keep her horse from being used to his fullest potential.

I’m trying to get an appointment to see my vet, she will see something differently this time, a lot has changed with this horse. I either need to find a trailer to use or hope someone drops from the books at a time when she can come to me. My main concern for this filly is not ride-ability or usability. I want her comfortable. She never has to be anything more than a pasture pet, I just want her to be a comfortable pasture pet.
