Teaching a horse to relax and go long and low

Just curious

I am just wondering, no flames please, how dressage long and low is different from a head down western pleasure horse? We do teach them to collect and our horses will put their heads down, so why do dressage people complain about low headsets in western pleasure and other classes?

Because in dressage long and low isn’t an end goal. It’s simply teaching a horse to stretch for a brief period - like yoga for a horse - to develop a better, more flexible, powerful athlete. But having to always maintain that head position is counter intuitive to building a working athlete.

Regardless findeight, she’s asking a legitimate question.

In the dressage long and low the horse should be driving forward, reaching under. While relaxing the back muscles, the rest of the horse is working.
