Tell me about Arabs in dressage

Nobody’s pearl-clutching. You walked into a thread asking about Arabs where I’ve said multiple times I don’t want a warmblood and told me to buy a warmblood.

Oh, please. Read what I actually said. The attitude is completely unnecessary and it may surprise you to know that I have not read every single comment. You’re posting on an open forum - do what you wish with the replies you get.

Will you kindly PM me a link to that horse if the OP passes? Thanks!

I mean this as an internet friend when I say none of us are surprised to learn you did not read every comment. You came in preaching to the wrong choir. :upside_down_face:

I don’t feel like I’m preaching to the choir.

OP said they wanted to ride at PSG one day. A lot of people do not realize how much of a jump there is from 3rd/4th level to PSG. At PSG, you really need a horse geared to the sport. Also, if you want to be competitive - which some people do, some people don’t, you are going to need something geared towards the sport.

No where did I say an Arabian couldn’t do it, or that even a WB was necessary. If OP has the ability to choose a prospect based on characteristics outside of just choosing a certain breed, then whether the horse is an Arab, or another breed, is arbitrary.

I can ride the PSG now, thank you. Things might go over a whole lot smoother on CoTH if everyone stopped assuming the person who posted above them was born yesterday.

That’s a thing, on CoTH. Nobody really knows how much you know or can do, so they assume that you know nothing at all.

Although… Sometimes people really give the impression that they don’t know x or haven’t done y but then state that they have, and anyone can be anything on the interwebz so :woman_shrugging:

I got my silver on my Arab x Hanoverian. Was it pretty? No. Was it respectable? Eventually lol.

You can absolutely do it on an Arab. The sport horse breeding has gotten much better than when I got my guy - he was the best in the country at the time (and I have the trophies from sport horse nationals to prove it), and he was/is not an amazing mover. One hell of a work ethic though. The huge positive for showing Arabs which no one has mentioned, is they don’t wilt on hot days the way many of the WBs do.

Like people have said, buy the best canter you can - it will serve you well.

Hi!

I haven’t read most of this thread but I will say I have a good friend who had her Arabs do dressage. Her first guy was a stallion his whole life but is someone who if was human, would be wearing a smoking jacket, smoking cigars and drinking good scotch. I rode him occasionally and he was such a gentleman. Lots of Polish Arab in there.

She bred him to a Proof mare (Proof was a phenomenally-moving Arabian racer and we visited him together) and produced a really quality Arabian male. She sent him to Hilda Gurney (needs no introduction here) in CA and she trained and showed him through 3rd or 4th level successfully. Beau is back with his owner with a local trainer that has him at FEI.

For sure, arabians - the right Arabians - can do the job. My current trainer has a half Arabian/half warmblood in training and they are solid PSG successfully schooling GP. Note that the Trakehner studbook, a German Warmblood studbook, only accepts Trakheners, TBs and Arabians. My last horse was a trak and she was an amazing horse. She was quite successful through 4th and had a natural passage and other collected work.

I came across this this morning and thought it was appropriate to post here. Looks like they are showing 4th level.

The first piaffe I ever executed was on a Saddlebred/Aab cross. She was registered as a National Show Horse. One of the nicest horses I wasn’t able to buy (bad timing) was an Arab/QH cross. Gorgeous mover, looked like a warmblood. I wouldn’t pass up an Arab or Arab cross who was built to do the job.

This, so much this. As a person who went from an arab to a WB, the lack of go when it gets above 80 is just annoying. And my WB isn’t faking it - she’s sweating and dull even before you put the saddle on in the heat & humidity.

Compare that to my arab who once completed a 13 mile hunter pace twice in one day in August (with a few hours in between) and was fresh as a morning breeze & reading to go the next morning. Could NOT tire her out - which had it’s down sides, sure, but there was always energy there.

Certainly not advocating for this if they’re not “your breed” because I think that’s so important. However, I got my TIP trained mustang who has fantastic dressage movement and a great brain for very low four figures including her being shipped to me. Because TIP horses are gentled and have all the basics of loading, haltering, tying, and hoofcare I was able to get her started fairly simply and move her straight to a boarding facility. I’ve had my first dressage lesson on her at this point and my instructor was super impressed by her.

I’m not sure they are my breed. Lusitanos and the occasional warmblood mare is my breed. After all this discussion about Arabs I still think that’s what I’ll end up with, no matter how long I have to wait. Something may come along and prove me wrong though.

I feel like we have a good number of Arabians in dressage in CA? I am riding one now who is not remotely bred for sport or even riding, really - he has halter lines top and bottom. But he’s a really fun little sportscar, pretty athletic and powerful when he’s using himself correctly and he has a good brain.

It looks like cute No No is located in Corrales, New Mexico. That’s a really nice area and wouldn’t be bad to visit in the winter. (Am I being an enabler?)
